OSHA investigating company after Lockport man’s death

Updated: June 30, 2014 12:53PM

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration has launched an investigation into a construction company after a concrete wall fell and killed a worker from Lockport last week on Chicago’s Near North Side.

Emergency crews responded to the 1400 block of North Ogden Avenue at 12:25 p.m. Friday after the wall at a construction site fell on top of 46-year-old David Varga, according to police and the Cook County Medical Examiner’s office.

The construction workers were erecting the wall when a crane dropped a 3,000-pound load of concrete, striking Varga, who was underneath the crane, according to OSHA spokesman Scott Allen.

Varga, of the 14600 block of South 135th Avenue, was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, where he died at 3:56 p.m., the medical examiner’s office said.

An autopsy performed Saturday was inconclusive pending a review of medical records.

OSHA has begun investigating Varga’s employer, Industrial Erectors Inc., Allen said.
