Funeral services have been announced for fallen Mokena soldier, PFC Aaron Toppen.
Toppen’s body is expected to arrive at Chicago’s Midway Airport at noon Saturday, with an escort traveling south on Cicero Avenue to 159th Street, then west on 159th to Harlem Avenue, south on Harlem to 191st Street then west to Wolf Road in Mokena, then south on Wolf, according to Vandenberg Funeral Home.
Visitation for Toppen will take place from 1 to 9 p.m. Monday at Parkview Christian Church, 11100 Orland Parkway, Orland Park. A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Parkview, with burial to follow in St. John’s Cemetery in Mokena.
The 19-year-old was one of five American soldiers killed June 9 by friendly fire while on a patrol in southern Afghanistan. Military officials said an air strike was called in after the unit was ambushed by the Taliban. It was one of the deadliest friendly fire incidents in the nearly 14-year war.
