Lockport man hurt in skydiving accident

Updated: August 12, 2014 6:31AM

A Lockport man remained hospitalized in serious condition Thursday after a skydiving accident Monday in LaSalle County.

Marseilles Fire Chief Michael Garrison said Curtis Kmiecek, 59, made the jump with other divers through Skydive Chicago but was not in tandem with another diver.

Garrison said the other skydivers reported that Kmiecek was “spiraling down” and they “knew he was in trouble because he’s an experienced diver.”

Kmiecek landed in a tree about a 11/2 miles north of Interstate 80, and it took about 30 minutes for rescue crews to locate him because they originally were given the wrong location, Garrison said.

He said Kmiecek was unconscious when rescuers reached him, and he ordered an airlift evacuation, which took Kmiecek to Good Samaritan Hospital in Downers Grove.

A spokeswoman for Skydive Chicago declined to comment about the accident.
