Construction of the long-awaited Morgan Park Sports Center at 115th Street and Western Avenue in Chicago will begin this week, according to a news release from the office of Ald. Matt O’Shea, 19th.
As a result, 115th Street for a block east from Western avenue will be permanently closed to traffic starting Tuesday, the release said.
Motorists will be able to drive on 115th Street west of Western Avenue.
Work will begin on the sports complex this week and is expected to be completed by early summer of 2015, the release said.
The 55,000-square-foot, $12 million building will have an ice rink, a gymnastics facility and a parking lot. Earlier this year, officials at local rinks said demand for ice time has been increasing in the area with the success enjoyed by the Blackhawks.
