Prison, justice system examined by new state legislative committee

Updated: August 15, 2014 6:19AM

The Joint Criminal Justice Reform Committee will be holding the first of several public meetings at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Bilandic Building in downtown Chicago in order to foster discussion on the growing problems of the state prison and justice system.

Co-chaired by Rep. Mike Zalewski, D-Riverside, the new state legislative committee has been formed in order to help tackle a variety of challenges the Illinois’ prison and criminal justice system is facing. Issues including overcrowding, criminal sentencing on gun and drug issues, and strategies for reform are to be the focus of the committee, with a report to the General Assembly due by the end of the year.
