A New Lenox man was sentenced to 41/2 years in prison Thursday for neglecting his elderly mother suffering from Alzheimer’s disease.

Mark Kuech, 51, pleaded guilty in April to felony criminal abuse or neglect of an elderly person in a Will County court.

Authorities alleged that Kuech left his 79-year-old mother alone in the basement of his New Lenox home for extended periods of time between May and November 2012. Paramedics were called in November 2012 and found the elderly woman severely malnourished and suffering from extensive bedsores.

At the time she was hospitalized, the woman stood 5 feet, 6 inches tall and weighed less than 90 pounds, authorities said.

Kuech’s wife had been the one who cared for the elderly woman but it became Kuech’s responsibility after his wife left him, authorities said.

“Mark Kuech selfishly neglected his obligation to provide the most basic care for his frail and elderly mother,” Will County State’s Attorney James Glasgow said. “This is the ultimate betrayal by a man who should spend the next several years in prison rethinking his priorities.”

The elderly woman still suffers from partial paralysis and dementia, authorities said. She no longer is able to recognize people or care for herself and requires fulltime nursing home care.
