A new superintendent has taken the reins at Country Club Hills School District 160 ahead of the first day of school, which is Aug. 20.

Sandra Thomas was hired by the board of education in April to replace retiring Superintendent Earline Scott who had worked for the district since 2008.

Thomas officially started the job in July for a salary of $165,000 a year.

“I began my career in the social service field working with children in foster care and moved into the field of education to make a difference in the lives of children,” Thomas said in a press release. “I am thrilled to have the opportunity to continue this work in a district that is so rich in pride and dynamic educational programming.”

She has worked as a school administrator during the past 12 years at several school districts which includes her most recent position as the assistant superintendent for student services and state director of special education for Joliet Public Schools District 86.

“We have no doubt (Thomas) will continue to build positive relationships with our community and drive a challenging education for our students,” said Country Club Hills School Board President Kay Giles.

A welcome reception for Thomas will be at 5 p.m., Aug. 20 at Country Club Hills City Hall, 4200 W. Main St.
