Veterans funeral processions at Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery no longer may be interrupted by truck traffic on Illinois 53.

At the request of Center Point Intermodal Center in Joliet/Elwood, the Will County sheriff’s office will provide traffic control at Illinois 53 and Walter Strawn Drive to facilitate traffic flow to and from the cemetery and the intermodal facility.

“This is a greatly needed service. It’s a huge concern,” said county board Speaker Herbert Brooks, D-Joliet.

Center Point will pay the county $50 per hour for two off-duty officers from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Mondays through Fridays.

The Will County Board’s finance committee approved the item through the the current fiscal year, which ends Nov. 30, but it likely will be extended beyond that.

Committee members want to make sure the county’s costs are covered and could increase the amount to $55 an hour next year. The off-duty officers receive $35 per hour, but added charges cover pension, Social Security and vehicle costs.

“We are not profiting from this. We just want to make sure our costs are covered,” said finance committee chairman Steve Wilhelmi D-Joliet.

Members debated whether to add additional costs now, such as workers compensation and gas mileage. In the interest of not delaying this service, they decided to move forward with the $50 per hour amount and review their costs for possible adjustment later.

“This is a public health and safety issue. You cannot put it off,” county board chief of staff Bruce Friefeld. “Route 53 is our responsibility. We can adjust the amount down the road. If they (Center Point) do not agree to increase costs, they can find someone else.”
