More vendors, new items, community involvement. Add it up and what one gets is an upgraded Crete Park-A-Palooza.
This year’s event is scheduled from noon to 10 p.m. at Crete Park, 515 First St.
According to a news release from the Park District, “The event originally was planned to give back to our great customers and taxpayers. The day and evening will feature something for everyone, and we hope everyone will come by, bring their lawn chairs and plan to spend the entire day with us.”
Music this year includes the Jay Walkers Jam Band from 3 to 6:30 p.m., and The Bluz Brothers — starring Crete’s own Mike “Stu” Stawicki, known by children of Crete as the Cookie Man and for his volunteer efforts in the community — from 7 to 10 p.m.
The Bluz Brothers, sponsored by Old Plank Trail, is an eight-piece band dedicated to playing R&B and party tunes. The band was the winner of the Gigmasters Rising Star award for five years, tours the country and been featured several times at the House of Blues in Chicago.
Bingo is another upgraded feature of this year’s fest. Sponsored by the Church of St. Mary and Alan Bartels State Farm Insurance, Bingo will run from noon to 10 p.m. inside the air-conditioned Willard Wood Park Center at 515 First St.
Touch-A-Truck will remain the same as previous years and will be held from noon to 3 p.m. It will feature some new vehicles, including a Com Ed Truck, a dragster and a Jr. Dragster, and some of the old favorites, such as tow trucks and fire trucks. The Touch-A-Truck area is free and allows kids to see vehicles, trucks and equipment up close.
The Wild West Pork Chops will be grilled on site by Hog Wild. The free Kids Area will include glitter tattoos, fun derby horse races, moonwalk castle, giant slide and an obstacle course. A new area, also free, will include baseball toss, quarterback toss and a soccer toss.
Another addition to the festival will be an area set aside for dogs, run by Girl Scout Troop No. 60458. This area will have costume contests, lookalike contests, tricks contests, photogenic contest, a basket raffle with great prizes, and homemade dog treats and toys. Additionally, 10 community booths throughout the park will have interesting things for kids and parents.
For adults, the beer garden will be open from noon until 10 p.m.
In order to help fund Crete Park-A-Palooza, the Crete Park District is holding a raffle. Tickets are $5 per ticket or five for $20. First prize is $250, second prize is $100 and third prize is $50. Tickets can be obtained via U.S. mail (make checks payable to Crete Park Pals) to 515 First St., Crete IL 60417. The drawing will be held the evening of Aug. 23 at the event. Winners need not be present.
The Crete Park District’s Facebook page will provide updates to the event planning throughout the month.
