A University Park woman was killed and five children riding in a minivan with her were injured in a crash early Tuesday on Interstate 57 near U.S. 30 near Matteson, according to Illinois State Police.
The two-vehicle crash happened at 2:18 a.m. in the southbound lanes of the highway, state police said.
A witness told police that a Chevrolet Sonic was traveling at a high rate of speed and was swerving around other vehicles when its front right side struck the rear left side of a Dodge Caravan van.
The minivan rolled over and came to rest on the right shoulder, and the driver, a 43-year-old woman, was ejected and taken to Stroger Hospital in Chicago, where she died, according to state police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office.
Five children in the minivan were taken to St. James Hospital in Olympia Fields with minor injuries, authorities said, and the driver of the Sonic was also taken to St. James with minor injuries.
State police had no information Tuesday on when charges might be filed in the crash.
