A groundbreaking ceremony was held this week for Mokena’s first senior housing, a project that village officials say addresses a growing need in the area.

“I’ve never received so much interest from seniors,” Mayor Frank Fleischer said of the project.

The $31.7 million development, Clarendale of Mokena, will include 156 apartments in a three-story building at 21536 Wolf Road. It’s being built by national developer Ryan Cos., which has an office in Naperville.

“We did a lot of research,” Ryan development director David Erickson said about the decision to build in Mokena. “We saw a need, and the village was very supportive.”

Clarendale is expected to open by fall 2015. Erickson said he expects strong demand for the apartments from members of the “baby boom” generation.

The building will include 60 independent-living units, 56 assisted-living units and 40 memory-care units. Studio and one- and two-bedroom apartments will be available ranging from 300 square feet to 1,300 square feet.

Erickson said Clarendale will include a bistro, fitness center, a private courtyard and a pub. It will be close to shopping, including the new Meijer store, and to the Old Plank Road Trail.

Discussions about offering senior housing in Mokena began last summer, after Fleischer was elected mayor in April.

“This was really my signature project,” the mayor said. “I wanted something for myself and the board to be proud of. ... We are going to be serious when it comes to development. ... This is probably one of the smoothest projects (approval process) I’ve seen in Mokena.”
