Updated: September 16, 2014 6:21AM

Homewood and its community relations commission will host the 14th annual “Dog Days of Summer” community block party from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday on Ridge Road between Harwood and Martin avenues.

The day will kick off with the “See Spot Strut” pooch parade, with prizes for Best Pet Tricks and Most Humorous Dog Costume as well as a Best in Parade award. There will also be food from local restaurants, games and live entertainment all day.

Among the scheduled events is a pet-friendly bar hop, known as the “pup crawl,” sponsored for the second year by the South Suburban Humane Society starting at 1 p.m. At 2 p.m. there will also be an ice cream eating contest sponsored by Mitchell’s Premium Ice Cream and Candies.

Throughout the afternoon, carnival games, face painting and jumpies will be available for kids, and local businesses will take part in a sidewalk sale. From 1 p.m. on, there will be a continuous lineup of live entertainment, starting with a performance for children by Super Stoli. At 2:30, classic rock cover band Funkhouser takes the stage, and from 5 to 8 p.m. the popular Maggie Speaks will perform their renditions of popular songs ranging from the 1950s to today.

“Homewood loves their animals,” Anna Devrise, the village’s public relations and marketing coordinator, said. “This is a wonderful event to get the community out and about to meet one another and have some fun.”
