Dennis and Karen Suglich, owners of Cuzin’s Bar and Pizza in Tinley Park, are hoping that music can help in the battle against brain cancer.
They’ve organized an outdoor music fest, “Jammin’ for a Cure,” to be held from noon to 8 p.m. Sept. 7 to benefit the John McNicholas Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation, which raises funds for research and treatment of the disease.
The foundation was established by Ed and Amy McNicholas, of Chicago’s Beverly community, whose son, John, died in January 2011 at 15 less than a year after being diagnosed with a brain tumor.
Dennis Suglich said he’s known the McNicholases since the three of them were children in Chicago’s McKinley Park community.
Suglich’s father-in-law, Chuck Lamphier Jr., died of a brain tumor in April 2013 at 68 after about a two-year battle with cancer.
After seeing what the McNicholases went through, then having a family member succumb to brain cancer, “it really kind of hit home even closer,” Suglich said.
He and his wife knew they wanted to do something to help support brain cancer research, and the idea of using music to achieve that goal was a natural.
“Both Chuck and John liked all types of music,” Suglich said. “Chuck was into Leon Redbone, Elvis, the blues, while John was more modern rock.”
Suglich said it has taken more than a year to make Jammin’ for a Cure a reality. Four bands will play in the parking lot of Cuzin’s: Ryan Broshear, who recently was named one of Billboard Magazine’s “Top Ten Country Artists to Watch in 2014,” as well as The Smiley Tilmon Band, Five Guys Named Moe and Blue 42.
Tickets for the fundraiser are $20 for adults and $10 for students with a valid school ID. Family tickets are $50. Tickets are being sold at Cuzin’s, 17704 Oak Park Ave., and are also available online at www.livelikejohn.org. Food and drinks will be available for purchase during the event.
