A Chicago man was ticketed after his pickup struck and killed a semi truck driver Tuesday on the Borman Expressway in northwest Indiana.
Trucker driver Gregory A. Ingram, 60, of Decatur, Ala., was hit about 4 p.m. while standing outside his semi on the outer shoulder on eastbound Interstate 80/94 near the Grant Street exit in Gary, according to Indiana State Police.
Ingram had parked on the side of interstate for unknown reasons and was getting ready to get back into his truck when a 1994 Ford Ranger pickup, driven by Darryll A. Bonaparte, 50, of Chicago, drifted over from the right lane, state police said.
The pickup’s passenger mirror scraped the side of the semi trailer, then hit Ingram, who was thrown onto the pickup and then to the ground. He was pronounced dead at Methodist Hospital Northlake Campus in Gary of head trauma, the state police said.
Bonaparte was cited for unsafe lane movement. Alcohol is not believed to be a factor in the crash.
The Borman saw intermittent lane closures until about 6 p.m.
