A new state law means the Illinois State Toll Highway Authority won’t distribute personal information about motorists who use the I-PASS system.
State officials said that includes the dates, times and places where motorists travel, as well as driver’s license numbers, telephone numbers and email addresses. The tollway authority won’t be forced to disclose any of the personal information with anyone except customers. The only exceptions would be subpoenas or with law enforcement in public safety emergencies.
The tollway has more than 2.2 million daily toll transactions.
About 84 percent of them are done by I-PASS. The tollway has more than 3.2 million active I-PASS accounts.
The policy took effect Jan. 1.
