A firefighter was hospitalized for dehydration while battling a blaze that destroyed a Harvey tavern Tuesday in the south suburb.
The fire started about 10:55 a.m. at El Ranchit Lounge at 15410 Park Ave. in Harvey, according to Harvey Fire Capt. Steve Gorman. The tavern was not open when the fire started.
When the owner arrived he noticed smoke and called 911, Gorman said. Nobody was inside when the fire started and no civilians were injured, but a Markham firefighter helping fight the blaze was taken to an area hospital with dehydration.
The fire started in the basement of the “thick-walled brick building with a concrete floor,” Gorman said. It took firefighters about an hour to control the blaze because there was no safe way to get to the basement and they had to let the blaze “vent itself out.”
Firefighters were able to prevent the blaze from spreading to a neighboring building, but the tavern was a “total loss,” Gorman said.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
