Bernadine Gwiazda was at Calvary Catholic Cemetery near Steger on Monday to visit the gravesites of her in-laws, Anna and Vincent Gwiazda, when she saw their headstones had been flipped over.
That was the case with dozens of markers in the cemetery, police said Tuesday.
“It was very devastating to us, as it was to so many people,” said Gwiazda, 82. “It’s just not right. The dead should be left to rest in peace.”
The Cook County Sheriff’s police are investigating, as 44 tombstones were overturned at the cemetery near Steger Road and Western Avenue, a sheriff’s spokeswoman said.
Police received a call Saturday from a cemetery visitor about the headstones, she said.
