Seven people were hurt Thursday — two with life-threatening injuries — and Interstate 57 was closed for several hours from 159th Street to 147th Street after a three-vehicle crash, Illinois State Police said.
The accident occurred in the southbound lanes near 159th Street at 1:15 p.m., police said. The highway was closed in both directions for several hours and delays carried over into rush hour, police said. But all lanes were open prior to 7 p.m., police said.
The two people with life-threatening injuries were airlifted to area hospitals, while five others were taken by ambulance, police said. As of 7 p.m., there were no fatalities, police said.
The accident was under investigation and charges were pending, police said. No further information was immediately available.
