A man accused of robbing a Southwest Side store and then causing a three-vehicle crash on Interstate 57 while speeding away from police Thursday afternoon has been charged for the robbery.
Robin Walker, 33, of the 8000 block of South South Shore Drive, was charged with one count of armed robbery with a firearm, police News Affairs Officer Daniel O’Brien said.
Walker is accused of robbing a business about 1 p.m. near South Western Avenue and West 117th Street, police said. Officers saw the suspect’s vehicle a short distance away and attempted a traffic stop.
Instead, the suspect sped off and eventually got on I-57, where Chicago Police ended their pursuit, police News Affairs Officer John Mirabelli said.
About 1:15 p.m., the suspect crashed on I-57 near 159th Street around Markham, Mirabelli said.
Illinois State Police said seven people were injured in the crash, including two with potentially life-threatening injuries who were airlifted from the scene. The other five were taken to hospitals and are expected to survive.
A second person was taken into custody, but that person has not yet been charged, police said.
