A Yorkville man has been charged with drunken driving after striking a pony while riding his all-terrain vehicle, the Kendall County sheriff’s office said. The pony later was put to sleep.

Quintin P. Wissmiller, 33, of the 11500 block of Brisbin Road, was riding a Polaris Ranger ATV on Brisbin Road near Helmar Road in unincorporated Kendall County when he struck a Shetland pony that was in the roadway around 3 a.m. Sunday, according to the sheriff’s office.

Paramedics from the Bristol Kendall Fire District took Wissmiller to Morris Hospital. At the hospital, police charged him with drunken driving and driving with a revoked driver’s license.

He was released on personal recognizance at the hospital because of his injuries, deputies said.

Dory, the 13-year-old Shetland pony, had gotten loose from a farm a couple miles away from the scene of the crash, Sheriff’s Deputy Craig French said Monday.

French said Dory belonged to the farmer’s daughter, and that the pony suffered a back injury as a result of the crash and had to be euthanized.
