State fire marshal fines owners of closed Chicago Heights gas station

The state fire marshal announced Friday that a record $386,000 fine has been imposed against the owners of a closed Chicago Heights gas station.

Redevelopment Enterprises Inc. owned the Marathon gas station at 201 E. Lincoln Highway in Chicago Heights that closed in 2008, according to a release from the Office of the Illinois State Fire Marshal.

The company ignored a 2011 order from the fire marshal’s office to remove three 37-year-old underground petroleum tanks because they posed a risk for potential explosion and environmental contamination, the release said.

Circuit Court Judge Kathleen Kennedy imposed the $386,000 penalty and ordered the tanks be removed, the release said.

The proceeds will be added to the Illinois Underground Storage Tank Fund for additional storage tank enforcement, the release said.
