Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan and Will County State’s Attorney James Glasgow have obtained a court order that requires Citgo to investigate last month’s fire at its Lemont refinery and are seeking at least $150,000 in damages from the company.
In a Friday news release, Madigan’s office said the Oct. 23 fire created a “significant threat to public safety and the surrounding environment” and that the company violated air pollution laws.
A company spokesman issued a news release saying that the company “has taken all necessary and appropriate steps to respond to this incident and will implement the appropriate corrective actions once our incident investigation is completed. The safety of our employees, the community and the environment is not only our top priority; it is our single most important core value. Citgo understands and appreciates the state’s responsibility to ensure all businesses operate with the same priorities, and we have and will continue to cooperate fully to this end.”
