Former state Sen. Rickey Hendon — who represented Chicago’s West Side in the Legislature before retiring in February — owes $31,531 to the IRS in unpaid federal income taxes and penalties for 2002, 2003, 2006 and 2007, according to a lien the agency has filed with the Cook County Recorder of Deeds.
The flamboyant Democrat — nicknamed “Hollywood” for his dabbling in TV and film production — was elected to the 5th District Senate seat in 1993. His resignation came about six months after federal authorities sent subpoenas to five state agencies seeking copies of contracts and other financial records related to nearly 50 not-for-profit agencies and a dozen individuals, many of them with ties to Hendon. Hendon, who is also a former 27th Ward alderman, hasn’t been charged with any crime, nor has he been named in the subpoenas.
Attempts to reach him at various phone numbers and addresses were unsuccessful.
Shortly before he resigned, Hendon voted in January to raise the state income-tax rate from 3 percent to 5 percent — a measure that passed.
Hendon, 57, gets $49,725 a year from his state pension, records show.
