Former NFL linebacker Napoleon Harris plans to run for the state Senate.

Harris filed nominating petitions in Springfield on Monday to run for the 15th District Senate seat, assistant James Jones said.

The Rev. James Meeks, current senator for the district, is not seeking re-election.

Harris, 32, played for Oakland, Minnesota and Kansas City during his seven years in the NFL.

Harris played college football for Northwestern after prepping at Thornton High School in Harvey, where he was an All-Area honoree by both the Daily Southtown and The Star.
