On behalf of the Steger-area Knights of Columbus Council 14562 and council Grand Knight Michael Smith, we wish to thank everyone who contributed to our 2012 fundraiser. Donations go directly to local, state and national programs serving individuals with developmental disabilities.
A special thank you to Walt’s Foods in Beecher and Crete, the Kmart in Steger and Jewel-Osco in South Chicago Heights for allowing us to solicit donations on their property.
Money local residents donated in 2011 was sent to the Misericordia Home, Special Olympics South Cook-Will/Area 7, SouthSTAR Services, Echo School and New Hope Center. We are in the process of selecting the 2012 recipients.
Council 14562, established in 2007, has more than 60 members from Beecher, Crete, Park Forest, South Chicago Heights and Steger.

Romney investments clearly better
So many people are complaining about Romney and his relationship to Bain Capital that they overlook the investments that Bain Capital made with private money.
Some of the businesses they invested in were AMC Entertainment, Burger King, Burlington Coat Factory, Clear Channel Communications, Dominos Pizza, Dunkin’ Donuts, Staples and Toys “R” Us.
On the other hand, Obama invested taxpayer money in Solyndra, Ener 1, Beacon Power, Abound Solar, Amonix Solar, Spectra and Eastern Energy. All of these companies were Obama campaign contributers, and they all went bankrupt.
This year, the choice is pretty clear I would think.
Thank you, White Sox
I want to thank the Chicago White Sox for lowering ticket and parking prices at U.S. Cellular Field for 2013. I have written several letters about prices to attend major pro sports, believing that if teams lowered the price of a ticket and parking many of us would show up more often.
The reality is that the Cubs and Bears have a more affluent fan base than our beloved White Sox. I wish the Sox could’ve lowered all tickets. Maybe raise the price of tickets for the first 10 rows and lower all the rest, especially in the upper deck and outfield seats.
I and many Sox fans appreciate what you are doing on and off the field. We appreciate the team giving all it had this season. If it weren’t for injuries, who knows how far the Sox would have gone. They gave us a lot of thrills.
I wish the players a good off season and am looking forward to 2013. By the way, I’ll be 72 in late March and as a lifelong Sox fan still have the dream of throwing out the ceremonial first pitch at a game before my life ends.

Website can help you vote smart
Thank you for Phil Kadner’s column about the 2nd Congressional District and the candidates on the ballot there in the Nov. 6 election. I would like to advocate that everyone vote smart on Election Day.
I recommend the website votesmart.org/elections, which states, “Party before country? Who are these people? Where conservatives and liberals join together to defend our right to the truth.”
You can get nonpartisan political information on the candidates who are running anywhere in the country as you try to find at least one political soulmate. I did, and the result surprised me.
