I am writing regarding the Oct. 22 story on Orland Park’s annual spelling bee. Organizer Bill Smith’s idea to hold this annual event is “dynamite,” especially for children, because spelling bees are educational and encourage healthy competition.
With the ardent spellers and the lucky spellers competing against each other, the atmosphere stays friendly yet competitive.
This contest is a great opportunity for children and adults to expand their vocabulary. Many of the words can seem esoteric to most of the contestants, so the elite spellers are singled out early on in the competition.
The winner had to spell more than 20 words correctly, which was an astonishing triumph. The bee is a great way for the community to come together in an educational way.
