It was great to see a happy ending for Rich Tolleson and his formerly cluttered home in Crestwood. Hopefully the clean slate will be just what he and his wife, Emily, need.
The U.S. Supreme Court heard arguments in two cases about what limits there are to the police using drug-sniffing dogs to apprehend drug dealers and drug runners. Tell me that I’m dreaming. How stupid can our government leaders be? Drug-sniffing dogs are at all of our borders and detect thousands of violators every year. Now drug dealers will put signs on their fences and homes reading, “No dogs allowed.” Talk about ridiculous!
I attended fallen Chicago firefighter Herbie Johnson’s wake. I’ve attended many wakes for civil servants and marines. I have never seen such an outpouring of love, respect and admiration. It was beautiful. I was in awe. Chicago lost a great man. God bless his brothers and sisters of the Chicago Fire Department and his family.
The biggest disgrace in Illinois is U.S. Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr. winning an election that he didn’t even show up for. People who voted for him have a mental problem. He is a disgrace to Illinois. He has made fools of everyone. Shame on you!

Since people are upset that Khalid Sheikh Mohammed is dyeing his beard red with fruit juice and crushed berries from his breakfast, why don’t they quit serving berries or colored juices? Bananas, apples, applesauce and white grape juice are nutritious and without color. It’s probably cheaper too.
Helen from Palos Hills
America will never cease to amaze me. For years we have sent our military into towns and cities all over the globe to protect human life from violence. But, for whatever reason, we seem to refuse helping the innocent children and families in Chicago’s Englewood community. Please help them.
Judy from Crestwood
Homer Glen officials used scare tactics to keep home rule. Voters in Homer Glen needed to vote no on home rule. Take a good look at your village. It has not changed. In fact, businesses and residents are moving out. Home rule is to blame. Officials are padding their pockets with our money and spending it like drunken sailors. It was time to put a stop to this on Election Day, but not enough people voted no for home rule in Homer Glen.
A Speak Out commenter said union workers go to trade schools and serve years of apprenticeship to learn their trades well. “Well” is a matter of opinion. The commenter also said handymen do not go to trade school. That is a fact. This implies that a union worker does it better than nonunion. I respect your right to have an opinion. But besides yourself, who are you trying to kid? There are plenty of expert craftsmen out there. Some pay union dues, some don’t.

I guess all President Obama has to do now is clean up from the previous four years. That should be pretty easy. I’m sure we are on our way to good times. Right?
If your mother aborted you when she was pregnant with you, you wouldn’t be here to make that choice. She had a choice. Evidently, she was pro-life.
To put things in financial perspective: The devastation of Hurricane Sandy along the East Coast can be as high as $50 billion in losses. Compare that to Illinois, which has the worst budget deficit in the United States at $43.8 billion.
When can we stop being politically correct? When can we stop turning our cheek to the Muslim Brotherhood, who are in Syria, Libya, Afghanistan, Iraq and Iran? Isn’t it about time we struck back and stop being so polite to our enemies?
John from Bridgeport
Drug addicts are not criminals. They are sick people who do not need to be in prison. They need treatment. Sending them to prison will only make things worse. Treatment is the only answer to drug addiction in America.
Bill from Orland Park
I don’t have to know anything about Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney to know we should have given someone else a chance. I look around my community. The storefronts on Harlem Avenue look like a ghost town. My friend’s children who have graduated from college either have no job or one not in their field that they had to take to survive. The climate in America seems so dire.
Politicians must honor pension and health care commitments made over the past 40 years to public-service retirees. Anything else is employment fraud. I think a high percentage of state retirees do not get Social Security or Medicare, and the low average state pension is subject to federal income tax. Allowing illegal immigrants to attend state universities at in-state tuition and giving health care to illegal immigrants are negative externalities that corporations, which hire and profit from illegal immigrants, must be made to pay for in taxes and fines.
Someone commented that they were really ashamed of the way our government helped the victims of Hurricane Sandy. Really? What are you reading? Everything I have read and seen demonstrates that the federal, state and local governments have done a good job dealing with this tragedy. I guess it’s easy to sit in your home and criticize others. Do you expect a miracle? The damage is overwhelming. Instead of criticizing, maybe you should send a donation to the Red Cross.
