Thank you to the Guardian Angels and the work they are doing to stop crimes. May God bless and keep all of you safe.

To the commenter who doesn’t think firefighters should get recognition when they give up their lives in the line of duty: If your house starts on fire and you’re in need of the fire department, save the call to 911, grab a garden hose and then tell us how easy it is.

We can get food cheaper at the Speedway gasoline station than at McDonald’s. We also get rewards points at Speedway toward more food.

A comment in Speak Out suggested people on the East Coast should have prepared for Hurricane Sandy by stocking up on gasoline and groceries. I’m guessing some of these people don’t have the resources to do this. And where would you stock gasoline — in their bathtubs?

Why do TV weathermen stand in front of the weather map? Many are overweight and block almost half of the map.

The corruption of the Chicago-way politics has now spread to Washington, D.C., and throughout the United States thanks to the equally corrupt media, the uninformed and the takers.

I lost my health insurance when I lost my job. I have a lot of hospital bills to pay. I asked for help but I got denied. Maybe I should go get pregnant, claim I don’t know who the baby’s father is and let the government pay for everything like half of these people do.

Here is some good news. If you enjoy delicious Italian food, there is a new restaurant you need to try. Bella Mia in Midlothian was a pleasant surprise. The food was wonderful. We’re definitely going back. It’s on 147th Street and a little hard to find, but you won’t regret going there. It’s the best Italian food we’ve had in years. I love Italian food. The decor makes it nice for special occasions, too. We’re already planning to have a birthday dinner there after only our first visit. I just had to spread the word. I loved it that much.

Why have so many people stopped using their turn signals? This is actually illegal. The driver can be ticketed for not using them. I don’t understand why people find it so hard to pull down or push up on that easy-to-use lever in every vehicle. Some I have seen with their cellular phone in their left hand pressed against their left ear. Don’t you people realize that the rest of us would really love to know which way you plan on going so we won’t run into you or get in your way of a turn?

Veterans Day is always celebrated on Nov. 11. That is why the tradition started at the end of World War I, which happened on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month, which is November. This great country of America has religious freedom because of our veterans. If this special day falls on a Sunday, so be it. We all can still give homage to our God, our country and our veterans.

The Democrats need to clean up their own yard before pointing the finger at everyone else. Illinois is more than $139 billion in debt and counting. Illinois has raised every possible tax it can under the Democrats like the income tax, the gasoline tax, the liquor tax, the cigarette tax and property taxes. You name a tax and they have raised it, and they are looking for more taxes to raise. We have Democrats who allegedly tried to sell an Illinois Senate seat. We have Democrats who handed the teachers union a raise even though Chicago is in high debt.

I think high school and college students who don’t study should bring a class-action lawsuit in court so they can get their passing grades similar to the Chicago firefighter’s situation. Do we want incompetent people?

Bill from Oak Forest

Republicans want to pass voter identification laws, but I don’t think they can show any significant examples of voter fraud. They want to pass voter identification laws to keep people from doing what they are not doing already.

The dumbing down of America just keeps rolling. These so-called reality TV programs are borderline insane. I came across the “Here Comes Honey Boo Boo” show. I had no idea what it was. Now I know it’s total garbage. This show glorifies a trailer-trash family that includes a pregnant 17-year-old mom, a pet pig and a mother who likes to hoard toilet paper for some reason. Talk about excrement!

Don from Orland Park

Never have I been so proud of my fellow Americans as I was on Election Day when we rejected the efforts of the radical right to suppress the vote, demonize organized labor, trivialize educators, ignore the working class and the poor, and deny women equal pay and protection against domestic abuse. The party of gray-haired old guys in dark blue suits is obsolete.

On Nov. 6 two states, Colorado and Washington, passed a referendum to make the recreational use of marijuana legal. How does John Q. Public square this against the Drug Abuse Resistance Education program taught to our students by local law enforcement agencies on the dangers of drugs?

Regarding nepotism: They all said they were extremely qualified for the job and just applied. Right, Illinois Secretary of State Jesse White, Cook County Chief Circuit Judge Tim Evans and so on. By the way, since the law doesn’t say I can’t hire family, it’s legal. But is it ethical?
