Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle gives us back one penny and says, “Look what I did for you.” Then she turns around and taxes us for buying a car from a private person. Illinois is nuts.
I wonder what the correlation is between a person’s driving habits and stress level? Tailgating, rolling stop signs and right on red, excessive speeding, etc. Where are you all going in such a hurry? Slow down a little bit. Take a breath — a deep breath. Life is too short to be in such a hurry. Smile more and stress less. Be thankful.

The Republicans are crying about voter fraud, but it seems like they are the only ones getting caught. They have been caught in several states including Indiana. Indiana Secretary of State Charlie White was removed from office after being found guilty of six felony charges including three counts of voter fraud.
Instead of getting a $25 gift card to pick up your kid’s report card, like parents from some Chicago public schools are getting, how about they deduct $25 from your Link card if you don’t?
Country Club Hills Mayor Dwight Welch stated, “It’s our time,” to get a casino. Country Club Hills would be a perfect location. We have Roger Agpawa, a felon fire chief. We have Regina Evans, an ex-police chief who is indicted for fraud. Where is there a better location to set up a gold mine to make money? They can bring back former city manager Henrietta Turner. Then we would have all the pieces in place for a perfect storm. Wake up! No one should be going anywhere near Country Club Hills as long as alleged bad people are running it.
Why do some Mexicans feel like their ethnicity deserves to be allowed into the United States any easier than anybody else’s ancestors? A vast majority of people came to this country legally. And don’t give me that line about families being torn apart. If your family is being torn apart, it is on your shoulders for entering this country illegally.
Maybe we can get U.S. Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr. to come out of hiding and return to Washington, D.C., if Congress votes on a proposal to name President Obama the greatest guy in the world. When Jackson returns to cast his vote on such a worthwhile proposal, the people from his 2nd Congressional District can nab him and make him answer some real question before ousting him as their representative. Someone should give Jesse former Gov. Rod Blagojevich’s phone number so Jesse can ask him where the most comfortable cots are in prison.
Why do we need all of these alderman? If they are only part time then they should get part-time pay just like a regular person would get part-time pay for a part-time job.
I think it’s very sad that stores have to be open on Thanksgiving evening to make a sale. We have so many days after Thanksgiving to shop. I think it’s because of the greed of the stores. They are not considering their employees who are having a family day on Thanksgiving. It’s awful. I will not shop at these stores.
I have to agree with a Speak Out commenter who stated that “Here Comes Honey Boo Boo” is a stupid TV program. Another stupid program is “Extreme Cheapskates.” Others that I don’t like are the ones where people go out and kill animals like “Duck Dynasty,” “Swamp People” and “American Hoggers.” There is too much killing and maiming of animals.
We Americans live in a most unusual country. On the day after Veterans Day when some places were closed to observe the holiday, U.S. Postal Service workers got the day off with pay while the veterans went to work. This is strange.
Football players years ago had leather headgear and terrible protection. The leather headgear couldn’t be called a helmet. Their shoulder pads and pants were like wearing nothing. The players were not protected anywhere near how current players are, yet the players now keep getting concussions. Players making millions do not care about getting fined $30,000 as Houston Texan Tim Dobbins was for the hit on Chicago Bear Jay Cutler. Players have to be suspended a certain amount of games and get no pay for the games that they are suspended. Get serious about discipline and you’ll get the player’s attention.
First the people in Tinley Park’s Brookside Glen subdivision block the building of a Wal-Mart, which I would have loved to see. Now the residents in Frankfort Township want to block Lenny’s Gas N Wash because they think it will destroy their neighborhood. Who do these people think they are? Why don’t they dry their tears, pull out their pocketbooks and just buy the land instead? You can’t dictate what is going to be developed around you no matter how wealthy you are.
Guest columnist Scott Reeder’s head is full of 17th century illusions if he thinks wages correlate with ability. The lone worker vs. corporate America can’t get a raise. There is a great power imbalance. The lone worker is a wage accepter. Wal-Mart is the wage setter. Corporate chief executive officers and professional athletes are the few the system allows to set their own pay. The system is run by corporations. The government must balance social and corporate power.
I honor Chicago Fire Department Capt. Herbie Johnson’s memory. My brother and granddaughter are firefighters. But two weeks of full-page articles about Johnson’s death is way overdone. Surely there is other news.
