Congratulations to Orland Park Public Library for marking 75 years, and thanks to Joseph P. Meier for taking so many great photos of this community entity. It was great to see all the improvements.
Regarding good neighbors: With all the negativity going around, on behalf of the Earleys, I would like to express my thanks to a truly wonderful neighbor, Dennis Hallberg. Through wind, sleet, snow, fall and sunshine he, without hesitation, shovels our walk, rakes our leaves, waters our flowers and is always there with a helping hand. This is what makes the world go ’round — good people. Thank you for all you do. We are grateful for a great neighbor.
I’ve been in the warehouse stores and witnessed carts loaded with 80 gallons of milk amongst other items. I work at food banks and do not see food coming in there in this manner. Are these being resold at higher prices in stores? I’m sure with no way to track this that the taxes they collect on this are put right into their pockets. Mom-and-pop stores are great, but the law is the law.
Moraine Valley Community College wants to increase its operating budget by $10,000 so they can drug test potential employees. If they want to use taxpayers’ money like that, maybe they should drug test the board of directors and administrator instead.

Before we start thinking about term limits we ought to think about pension limits for these politicians. If you have a politician coming in every eight years, that just means more pensions given out. That’s ridiculous.
I am part of the 51 percent who pay taxes. I love and have always been proud of the United States. How saddened I am to see the direction in which we are heading. It’s a path in which the majority of goods, property, health care and services are run by the government. I no longer see people achieving the American dream. I see socialism.
I think it’s funny how the Rev. Jesse Jackson, U.S. Rep. Bobby Rush and U.S. Rep. Danny Davis are all saying how sorry they feel for former U.S. Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr. But nobody is saying they are sorry for what he has done. I wonder if they would feel so sympathetic toward anybody else who is so guilty. I don’t think so.

Country Club Hills Mayor Dwight Welch ordered his police department to provide extra security to guard his home. The good news is the mayor’s plan is working. I don’t think there has been a single police report of a home invasion at Welch’s home since August. Providing for protection for the mayor’s possessions is just another example of Welch’s abuse of power and more misuse of taxpayers’ money. The citizens of Country Club Hills continue to get the short end of the stick. Instead of the people, it always seems to be about Welch and what scheme will benefit him.
There are a lot of school districts in the south suburbs that refuse to use the words “Christmas break.” They use the term “winter break” instead. Shame on them! Now these freaks and illegal immigrants want to change everything and freeload on our government.
To J.K.: I disagree with you on public schools. We all pay for them with our tax dollars. A private school education is a luxury not always worth the price. I received an outstanding education at Shepard High School. I attended a public university on a partial scholarship as an honors program member. My children receive a top-rate education in our local school system where every need is met or exceeded. You could have the same or more for your sons without spending an additional dime. A private education does not equal a superior education, just a more expensive one.

It’s the same old tricks by kicking the can down the road. We are facing a crisis with this financial cliff and Congress is still playing “my way or the highway.”
I’m appalled at the negative responses about late Chicago firefighter Herbie Johnson and the job. My father and son are both firemen. I thank God every day that they are brave enough to go out and rescue people. I can’t believe there is negativity about this. I honor Herbie Johnson and all of the firemen and policemen.

Dear Mr. President: With your cuts in the military budget and personnel, instead of flying the American flag over the White House why don’t you wave the white flag of surrender to anyone who wants to take over the United States? Wouldn’t that be a lot easier and a lot cheaper, President Obama?
John from Bridgeport
All politicians should be where they belong. That is in prison. They are no good. I don’t care who they are. They are nothing but a bunch of lying thieves. They should be locked up. Throw the key away.
Dick from Stickney
The Illinois government needs an ethical audit or a political enema. Either way you would flush out the same type of person.
To the commenter who stated no citizenship should equal no license: What good would that do? Half the people driving don’t know how to drive, don’t have a license or have a suspended license, and don’t have insurance.
Can’t we get a few months of rest? The election is over yet they are talking about 2014 and 2016. Why can’t we get a break? The last election was a drain. We need time to exhale.
