Speak Out for Dec. 30, 2012

Some weapons collected Wednesday's Los Angeles Gun Buyback event are showcased Thursday Dec. 27 2012 during news conference LAPD headquarters

Some of the weapons collected in Wednesday's Los Angeles Gun Buyback event are showcased Thursday, Dec. 27, 2012 during a news conference at the LAPD headquarters in Los Angeles. Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa's office says the weapons collected Wednesday included 901 handguns, 698 rifles, 363 shotguns and 75 assault weapons. The buyback is usually held in May but was moved up in response to the Dec. 14 massacre of students and teachers at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn. (AP Photo/Damian Dovarganes)

I was wondering how many cops use guns or assault rifles. I also was wondering how many of those cops have shot innocent citizens.

Where is Carol Moseley Braun in the race for former U.S. Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr.’s seat? If former U.S. Rep. Mel Reynolds can put in his hat, then so can she. The machine will give the lobbyist monetary fund donations for a “scratch my back, I’ll scratch yours” type of puppet candidate.

We just got our county tax bill for Evergreen Park. Is there any way that Evergreen Park can abdicate from Cook County and move to another country? I’d love to know how to get an independent audit of Cook County so we can actually see how many people are pocketing our money.

It’s a sad day. Hostess Brands is gone. The diluted union believes their union bosses. Now they are all out of work. They are also obligated to the Democratic Party. They will all go on some kind of entitlement. Do you wonder why the United States is so screwed up?

A recent Speak Out comment on temporary shrines makes some good points. I think the constructive value is for family and friends, and maybe for a fleeting second it reminds people to be careful. As for the comment on better investing time and expense, how do you know they aren’t doing that, too? The comment about our violent culture is right on except for the sentence about mental status. I think most, if not all, the people that go on a violent rampage are very sick.

When is the media going to leave these poor people in Newtown, Conn., alone? They need time to be by themselves and grieve. The last thing I would want to see is a bunch of TV cameras and President Obama showing up to do their political posturing.

Too much is going on in the United States that we keep dragging our feet and can’t get anything done. Our country is being held hostage by people who don’t care about anything but protecting the millionaires.

There are so many college football bowl games now that it has become a farce. There are some teams that have .500 records. There is even one team with a 6-7 record. How about a Toilet Bowl game? You can get the two teams with the worst records in America to play each other. It would be played in the Flushing neighborhood in New York. The stadium can have a huge rim on it. The team that loses would get a golden plunger as the trophy. It can be sponsored by Charmin toilet paper or Ty-D-Bol.

It has not been a good year for Tinley Park. Between mob-action activities, the manhunt for bank robbers, wasteful spending on a train station and poorly organized events, Tinley Park really has to address an image problem.

Congress took off for Christmas vacation and two extra days after Christmas. What do they need a vacation for? Aren’t they always on vacation? If Congress got paid for each of their accomplishments then they would definitely be broke.

Compare the paycheck of a soldier who is in Iraq or Afghanistan to that of a fireman, policeman or teacher. Let’s see who really deserves a raise.

Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel has relaunched his effort to privatize Midway Airport. Everything is up for sale in Chicago.

GOP doesn’t stand for Grand Old Party. GOP stands for Gouge Ordinary People. That’s why Republicans give corporations great tax breaks.

People who go into the profession of teaching are not the type of people to use guns to shoot people. They have a more loving personality. Someone who thinks it’s easy to take a gun and just shoot at anybody has their head in the sand. I think if you surveyed all these schoolteachers, you would be lucky to find 2 percent who would even be willing to use a weapon. The people promoting arming teachers are way off base.

I think U.S. House Speaker John Boehner’s “Plan B” bill failed due to lack of support. The Tea Party only cares about their political posturing.

I think the cause of high class size in schools is the school board. They have a policy not to fail anybody because it will cost too much money to hold them back. It’s the teacher’s fault, too, because they go along with the board. It’s a shame.

If every man, woman and child in Illinois owes $7,373 for pension debt, then that is OK and only fair. I am childless and pay $5,000 per year in property taxes to educate your kids.

Remember how after the 9/11 tragedy they tried to tug out our heartstrings and say we are all lovely New Yorkers and how we need to come together? Right after that they passed some of the most restrictive and privacy-invading policies and laws America has ever put up with, all in the name of safety. All I heard after the Newtown, Conn., tragedy was how those poor innocent children could have been our children. Now there is a task force set up to recommend new gun control policies. Gun control policies will be just like airport security.

Some Speak Out commenters have been complaining about “Proud Union Home” signs on people’s lawns. Maybe you should put “Proud business owner who pays small salaries, provides no benefits and terrible working conditions” signs on your lawn.
