We just wanted to say to blood and bone marrow donors: Thank you for the gift of life.

A Speak Out commenter stated that maybe we should only have the weapons that the writers of the Constitution knew about at the time. If that’s the case then let’s apply this attitude to other amendments. I don’t think the writers of the First Amendment had the telephone, Internet, Twitter, Facebook or even SouthtownStar.com in mind when they gave you the rights of free speech or press. Why should every right given to us in the Constitution evolve with the times and technology except for the Second Amendment?
I find it interesting that Palos Hills Mayor Gerald Bennett and Tinley Park Mayor Ed Zabrocki are spearheading an effort for pension reform for fire and police pensions. Palos Hills does not have its own full-time fire department, and the Tinley Park Fire Department has part-time firefighters. Does that mean that these towns’ police department and public works pension funds are underfunded? I’m just curious.
We keep kicking the can down the road and looking like a dysfunctional government. It’s beginning to be an embarrassment. Congress can’t compromise on anything. It hasn’t always been like this.
It’s wonderful that people are adopting all of these animals and taking them home to give them a good home. But I believe that these new pet owners should be given information about how to respect their neighbor’s property now that they have animals. Most people had dogs when yards were fenced. Now a lot of them are older or never had a dog before and they really don’t know what the courtesies are. Have respect for your neighbor’s property as much as your own.
The Democrats like to paint the Republicans as rich businessmen. All that proves is that Republicans are better at making money than the Democrats. The Democrats have been labeled as spenders. We recently had the choice between a businessman, Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney, and a spender, President Obama. So what do we do in a bad financial economy? We rehired the spender. Well, some of us rehired the spender. The rest of us have to live with your decision.
I’d like to thank the gentleman who paid for my lunch at Bakers Square because he was doing 26 charitable things for the people who died in Connecticut. He did this in their memory. It was very generous and a wonderful thing to do.

What happened to all of the good Christmas specials that used to be on regular television like “Going My Way” or “The Bells of St. Mary’s” starring Bing Crosby. I can’t find these movies anywhere. Is that just something else I need to pay for?
Profitable big-box retailers and multinational corporations should not get tax rebates unless they first provide health care and living wages to all of their employees, even part-time employees. Also, their chief executive officers should make no more than 20 times what the least-paid employee earns. Why should Illinois taxpayers subsidize the working poor created by corporate America with Link cards and Medicaid? Social justice will not occur spontaneously. Free-market theory is admittedly nonnormative. The public is responsible for the elderly and infirm, not for market casualties. America does not aspire to be China.
Illinois politicians have destroyed this state with their greed, stealing and overspending. This pension situation is a total disgrace. They spent it. They misused it. They should be sent to jail for fraud.

When you consider the amount of mail that is processed every day and how few mistakes are made, I think they are doing a superior job at the U.S. Postal Service. And the price is right. To be able to send a letter across America for less than 50 cents is amazing. The post office should be commended.
Chicago made news again by breaking 500 homicides for the year of 2012. I think if they had brought in the National Guard then the numbers would have been less.
I was in the store the other day and heard a 12-year-old kid ask his mom for an energy drink because he was exhausted. He needed it to do his yard work. When I was 12 years old my dad had an energy supplement for me. He used the bottom of his shoe and kicked me in the butt. That’s where I got my energy from.

How many more times has Robbins Police Chief Johnny Holmes driven drunk but just hasn’t been caught? He is supposed to be enforcing laws and keeping people like us safe from drunken drivers.
Some new members are coming into Congress in 2013. Good riddance to all Tea Party members who I think have done nothing but make a bad situation worse.
So now a family wants to sue Connecticut for $100 million in the aftermath of the school shooting. How is the state responsible? This is the problem in the United States. We always blame whoever has the money so we can sue. The blame lies with this nut who did the shooting. Another problem is we are so worried about the rights of the mentally ill that it takes someone killing somebody to do anything about the mentally ill. Everyone thinks they are OK because they are on their medication. Then they stop taking their medication and go nuts again.
