Kudos to the people at Working Bikes Co-op as well as those who have made donations. It’s amazing to think that old bicycles can go from the Chicago area to Peru, Tanzania, Angola and other countries.
To the commenter who goes to restaurants with $100 bills and blue jeans: I have something to say. Just because a person has money does not mean that they have any class. Class extends beyond dress. It also includes manners, courtesy and common sense. Many people are lacking in those these days. It really is a shame. Celebrities, for instance, are millionaires yet most of them have no class. It is something that money cannot buy.
Please stop with the tattoos. I hope this is a phase that will soon pass with America’s youth. You look stupid. Enough already! I look back 15 or 20 years ago when I was a teen and thank my lucky stars that I didn’t permanently mark my body. Imagine how sexy a chubby 35-year-old father of two would look with a giant Chinese script on my now-unimpressive chest. Sweet ... not!

Because of the increase in payroll taxes and the closing of certain loopholes, the only people really being hurt are the middle class and small-business owners. But remember that it was President Obama who campaigned and guaranteed the middle class would not be hurt. Thank businessmen, Google and Hollywood celebrities, to mention just a few, who got lucky since they were all able to employ pricey tax attorneys and pay dividends early and were able to shelter the money that would normally go toward taxes. I guess all of their contributions to Democratic organizations paid off.
Community High School District 218 Supt. John Byrne ought to demand that Johnny Holmes step down from the school board. Why is Byrne allowing him to stay on? Is this some kind of “good friend” thing going on? What does it take? Holmes already has two DUIs. What kind of example is this setting for the kids?

To the SouthtownStar: I wonder how many high school kids get up and actually look at your sports section.
Think about it. When our Constitution was written, the “arms” we were allowed to bear were single-shot muskets and pistols. Why on God’s green Earth should the public be allowed to have current military-style weapons in their houses? An AK-47 is not a hunting weapon or recreational weapon. It’s a killing weapon. Limit the weapons for the public to hunting rifles and handguns. If the bad guys get caught with military-style weapons, it should be a mandatory five years in prison.
Regarding insurance: To Scott from Hickory Hills: Phil Kadner’s article about U.S. Sen Mark Kirk’s stroke was about the insurance problem in America, and I do remember that he gave Kirk good wishes about his situation and ongoing recovery. There’s no need to throw a comment about former U.S. Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr. out there. Jackson has nothing to do with this situation.

Do you notice how they no longer ask the people to vote on certain controversial legislation like same-sex marriage? That’s because they want to force it on you whether you like it or not. All around the United States including very liberal California, when they ask the people to vote on same-sex marriage, the bill is struck down. If bills like this are constantly struck down then why are some Illinois lawmakers looking to pass a same-sex marriage bill? It’s because they have stopped asking us for approval. Our so-called representatives don’t care about the will of the people anymore.
Regarding the Bensenville kidnapping involving the man who stole a sport utility vehicle with a baby in the back seat: This could have been avoided if the mother did not leave her SUV running and with her baby inside. No mention is made about that. I feel the mother should be charged also. Haven’t people learned that you never leave a baby alone in a car, let alone with the engine running? That mother should be ashamed of herself.

Roses are red. Violets are pink. Democrats are in office. Now watch your take-home pay shrink.

About funding Illinois pensions: Eliminate all state-issued vehicles. Let state employees use the own cars. This surely would help the current funding crisis facing our pensions.
BK from Evergreen Park
I have seen parents leave kids at concerts while they go to the carnival part. These places are not day care centers.
To the people who are upset about high school sports coverage: There are other papers out there. The SouthtownStar is a great newspaper that does cover high school sports. The only professional team in action now is the Chicago Bulls. How much coverage of that do you need? High school and college players play sports for the love of the game. We can’t say that about pros. It’s nice to see what your kids’ high schools, friends and classmates are doing and maybe even see your kid’s name in the paper. It’s pretty cool. Maybe you don’t have kids.
I do not have prescription drug coverage and needed to get Tamiflu. The doctor sent the prescription to Walmart. I called them to see how much it would cost. It was $119 for 10 pills. I thought I would call Walgreens for a price. It was $139. I also called Target. It was $139. I told Walgreens and Target I could not believe the difference. Guess where I got my prescription.
