A commenter said families could donate to schools to help pay for supplies. I work for one of the worst Illinois school districts. I don’t think they can get any money from these parents. There isn’t any.
Dearest flu shot promoter, shame on you that spread this flu. Whether you took the vaccine in the arm or sprayed it up your nose, you are coming in contact with we who rely on healthy living and our inherent immune systems. I know three people who had the vaccine in October. They have been sick twice already with the flu. Anyone sick with the flu should stay home, drink fluids and eat chicken soup. Unless you’re 82 years old or older stay out of the emergency rooms. You are infecting the staff and others waiting for real medical attention.

About teacher paydays: A commenter from Mount Greenwood said to save money and pay teachers fully over nine months. It’s a nice thought but is wrong on two accounts. Schools, which are paid quarterly by the state of Illinois, invest funds until they are actually paid out. If you pay teachers fully by June, you lose months of interest. The cost of checks is minuscule. Besides, intelligent and educated teachers and administrators use direct deposit. There’s no paper, instant access and no cost to schools. I have not seen a school or pension paycheck for 30 years.

What’s all the fuss about ESPN commentator Brent Musberger’s reaction to the pretty face of Katherine Webb? Did he say anything naughty or sexy? “Wow” in itself is not suggestive, and there is no need for an apology from the network prudes. The Chicago Sun-Times had a photo of her in a bathing suit. Where’s the uproar? It’s a reporter’s job to call ’em as he sees them. Remember Chicago Cubs announcer Harry Caray and his comments about Cubs ball girl Marla Collins? Send the network Quakers a subscription to Playboy.

When are the people of Illinois going to wake up? Our state’s credit rating has been downgraded to the lowest in America. I think our state is near bankruptcy. And the state has been run by Democrats. Can’t we at least give the Republicans a chance to clean up this mess? Indiana and Wisconsin have done it. No, we have the Democrats in Illinois running the show and we are going down. We are going to pay for this. Your home values are going to continue to go down and your cost of living in Illinois is going to skyrocket.

I think term limits are a good idea. Otherwise, special interest groups will keep control of everything as they have now whether it is local, state or federal. I think four years is enough. How about limiting politicians to only working on Saturdays? How about limiting the age to retired people who are older than age 65 and who have had life experiences?
Why would any state allow illegal immigrants the privilege of getting a driver’s license? To begin with, they are here illegally and have no legal identification. They can’t get car insurance because they are undocumented people. Who knows what kinds of crimes they have committed in the past? Why are we rewarding these cheaters?
Regarding the SouthtownStar’s coverage of high school sports: I thank them. Where else do you see girls sports covered? Thanks for the equal coverage.
People now are always in a rush, complaining of what they don’t have. There is too much anger and bitterness going on in the world these days. I think people need to take a few minutes to appreciate the little things in life or do a good deed for someone once in a while.
Now is the perfect time to reduce the Chicago City Council. Since people are retiring and resigning. Just don’t fill those jobs. Let them retire or leave. We don’t need 50 aldermen.
In the end, the answer of pregnancy lies with the woman. Why? Because it’s her body that gets pregnant. A man can always walk away if he chooses to since he’s not pregnant. Is it right? No, a man is no man if he doesn’t support his kids fully. I’m a mom who told her daughters that the responsibility for pregnancy will be on them since they will be pregnant, not the man. Women must take responsibility for their own actions. Bringing strange men into your kids’ life is ignorant.
Regarding the Epiphany and how long people keep up their Christmas decorations: OK, Speak Out fans, I’m man enough to realize that you have corrected me. I hope you partied on and celebrated the Epiphany. I guess my point was that when the holiday commercialism begins in October, I am burnt out by December.

I guess the result of the football game between the University of Notre Dame and the University of Alabama answered the question of which NCAA football conference is the best. The best can only be the Southern Conference when a great team like Notre Dame gets pummelled and thrashed in every aspect of the game. There’s no comparison.
I read Bela Gandhi’s recent Daily Splash column about dating. It’s true that reconsidering your requirements can help. After dating average oafs, my soul mate is a teddy bear of short stature.
Why do we even have a debt limit if all we ever do is just increase it? Doesn’t it mean that we should stop spending once we get to it?
