The Academy Awards are coming up on Feb. 24, but I feel so out of the loop. I haven’t seen any of the films nominated. How about you?

Vincent Lockett and Anthony Davis, two Country Club Hills aldermen, were removed from the April ballot for failing to turn in receipts for their expense accounts. Mayor Dwight Welch said, “If anything, it exposed the fact that the aldermen in charge of the purse strings of the city since May 2011 have ignored good policy and procedures and they now have to bear the brunt of their misconduct.” With a history of misuse of taxpayers’ money that seems to go back far beyond 2011, it sounds to me that Mayor Welch is the pot calling the kettle black.

Speak Out is great. Where else can you read clueless people squawk about their neighbors who are overpaid? You know. the overpaid neighbors like firefighters, teachers and more. These are professionals who are paid less than $100,000 per year. Then you read that $7.5 million is not enough for former Chicago White Sox catcher A.J. Pierzynski. Is Pierzynski really worth more than 75 teachers or firefighters?

Hickory Hills

I think if U.S. House Speaker John Boehner would get off this pedestal and stop thinking that he is a king, then maybe our economy would be better off. Every time President Obama brings something up, Boehner turns around and does the opposite. Boehner has a cocky attitude. If the people would realize what he is doing to the United States then maybe the next time the Republicans run for office, the people will knock them out of office.

Chicago

It seems like everybody wants to speak about immigration reform, but nobody ever speaks about immigration enforcement. This should have been done 50 years ago.

The shenanigans that Cook County Sheriff Tom Dart and Chicago Ald. Ed Burke have pulled with hiring relatives and giving them high salaries are disgusting. I think the federal government should step in and find out what is going on between the two of them. It’s a black eye to Chicago.

I would rather have the firemen ready to fight a fire than picking up garbage or whatever else these people would like firefighters to do. My son and father have fought a fire in frigid weather with icicles hanging off the nose. Those nights of being out there for hours in freezing temperatures or in the heat of summer covers them just sitting around, as these people state. Firefighters don’t just sit around doing nothing. They take care of equipment or the firehouse. I don’t understand all of this negativity about the fire department.

I’m not trying to be insensitive, but there are too many roadside memorials in Tinley Park and Oak Forest. Isn’t this what cemeteries are for?

Gasoline prices have gone up at least 90 cents in the past month from what I’ve seen. That’s crazy. I just saw gas for $3.95 per gallon. A month ago, I filled up for $3.04 per gallon. What’s going to happen in the summer months when the government and oil companies have their ridiculous scam called “summer blend.” They are going to raise the gas prices even more. Why are we paying these outrageous prices?

Our current politicians in Springfield should be ashamed that they refuse to tackle Illinois’ pension crisis. We the voters are not responsible for this mess. Both Democrats and Republicans better start working together to solve this. If you can’t do your job, you’ll be fired at the end of your term. We will vote for a new group that wants to get the job done. Quit playing the political game. Start doing the job you are paid to do. Take some pride. The whole United States is watching. We are still in last place when it comes to pension funding.

Blue Island

When we are thinking about the issue of gun control, one thing we have overlooked is the ammunition. Why can’t we trace spent bullets and shells? We should make the manufacturers of ammunition mark both the shell and projectile by using scanner technology so every bullet used can be traced back to the buyer of the bullet. This would go a long way in controlling gun violence.

Ben from Park Forest

All the values that I was raised to believe in have been stripped by this current low-class and corrupt federal, state and local government. It’s time for the majority to speak up against the minority.

A commenter from Palos Heights talked about faulting the Republican Party for the power outage at the Super Bowl. We can’t forget to add former President George W. Bush.

Homer Glen

I’m tired of people talking about welfare recipients. It’s hard to keep the government out of anything. If the government would give these people jobs then you wouldn’t have to worry about them being on the welfare rolls.

A lot of little boys are spoiled by their families. For most women, it’s in their nature to be nurturing and loving. So many men think that when they get married that woman should still cater to them. It shouldn’t be like that in this day and age. Most men think that the woman should take care of the baby, clean and do this and that, while he walks around and acts like a king. It’s a shame it’s still like that. I’ve seen this in so many families.

If one person can steal $53 million from the small town of Dixon, Ill., then what do you think is going on in Chicago, Cook County or Springfield?
