Coding a bullet’s shell casing makes about as much sense as putting a serial number on a gun. Both can be filed off.

BBC from Evergreen Park

The Chicago paramedics and the emergency room staff at MacNeal Hospital in Berwyn did a fantastic job treating me for a heart attack. Thank you so much, Dr. Kurt Erickson and staff. I know they all had better ways to spend their Sunday night.

About tax dollars spent: Instead of the constant criticism of teacher pensions, why are people not enraged by the tax dollars eaten up by costs incurred and services provided for the ever-growing number of repeated criminals?

Tinley Park

Lucky you if your newspaper is on your front porch. Your deliveryperson should teach customer-satisfaction classes.

Yes, unions were a good and necessary thing 100 years ago, but I think they are only bloodsuckers and not needed now. Stop with the tired, old child workers, sweatshops, etc., garbage. Those days are long gone. Unions are no longer needed for anything. You have the government representing all of the people now.

Regarding what really makes Americans different: Former President George Washington said, “A free people ought not only to be armed, but disciplined; to which end a uniform and well-digested plan is requisite; and their safety and interest require that they should promote such manufacories as tend to render them independent of others for essential, particularly military, supplies.” I think it was the people that are sovereign not the government. The government is a creation of the people and, thus, a servant of and to the people.

Thanks for letting us have our opinions heard in Speak Out.

I see something wrong with providing people with an interpreter at the Illinois Secretary of State facilities. I was shocked to see how many people received this special service to help them obtain a driver’s license. Don’t we have to read and speak English to drive in Illinois? It seems like a dangerous situation to me. It’s like an accident waiting to happen.

Orland Park

Our property taxes doubled while home values severely declined, but Habitat for Humanity wants new homes for taxpayers.

Voters who would elect a Daley or Madigan for governor of Illinois would have to have their heads examined. These two families have been a problem in Illinois since the beginning. Don’t vote for them.

Jack from Oak Forest

Former U.S. Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr. hasn’t even checked into his cozy cell yet the rats are screwing around trying to get his job. I realize that the unemployment rate is very high in the United States and that is why they need the 2nd Congressional District job. At least they will not have very big shoes to fill.

Pete from Chicago

Governors State University is busy selling bonds for the building of a multimillion-dollar college residential complex. Meanwhile, in the towns that surround GSU in University Park, there are hundreds of foreclosed or abandoned homes in need of some human occupancy. Why not use the resources that are already here and would help both the college students and the communities? The south suburbs’ economies resemble that famous sinking ship the Titanic. We need to start deploying our rescue boats now so our future will not be food for the bottom-feeders.

Ben from Park Forest

I think everybody knows that the entire state of Illinois is in the fiscal mess that we are in because of Chicago and Crook County.

About solutions: “There is no need to raise taxes. Just cut the pork, corruption and fraud.” I read this Speak Out comment by Pat from Monee. It’s such a simple concept. It can be done. The plan is to find enough people with common sense and integrity to replace the current crop of self-serving hypocrites. We are the most important component of that plan. We must have enough self-respect to accept nothing less than accountability from all elected officials.

MJ from Worth

It will take more than putting additional restrictions and costs on upstanding and law-abiding citizen gun owners to remedy Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel’s crime and murder problems in Chicago. How about arresting the gangbangers and issuing stiffer penalties and more time to be served, or even relocation to Washington, D.C., for tutoring and pep talks by President Obama? I think Emanuel is avoiding the real problems for political gain.

Chicago Heights

I was raised Catholic and have many Catholic friends. My best friend lost a leg to cancer at age 12, a sister and his life at age 16. Another sister died two years later from cancer. A decent family was destroyed. Another friend had a brain tumor. I prayed. There were no signs, no answers. I raised two children without church but with a moral code. One is Catholic, one is atheist. Both are decent, honest to a fault. If I face God, I’ll have more questions than God will. You don’t need God or church to be decent.

D.P. from Crete

I am so relieved to hear that the CTA and Metra do not think it is safe to carry a weapon on trains and buses. I think the ones that should concern you are already carrying a weapon and now they will be happy that no one else will. It’s more open season for criminals instead of on criminals. Politicians, get a clue. Who are you protecting anyway?
