Thanks for putting slot machines in bars, restaurants and bowling alleys, Illinois. Now I will not have to go all the way to Indiana. They are not paying off that much in Indiana anyway.
The Little Red Schoolhouse Nature Center is such a nice place to take children. I don’t feel like people use it like they should. They are looking for a donation of a church pew for seating inside. Maybe somebody would be good at making some kind of rustic-looking chairs for them.
Since the sequester began, all the government had to do was spread around the cut sensibly. “Sensibly” is the key word. So they make cuts in the military and education. How stupid can you get? How about cutting the millions and billions of dollars that we give to countries that want to kill us? How about cutting the Department of Energy that is supposed to be the watchdog for our gasoline prices?

Being raised Catholic and attending Catholic schools, I learned that Jesus served the poor. A good Catholic loved their neighbor, fed the poor, helped the sick and encouraged the disadvantaged. Yet now, I don’t hear this from Catholics. Instead, I see a focus on reproductive issues such as birth control. This bothers me. Shouldn’t we be advocating programs that help the poor such as health care for all? Instead, I hear complaining, cynicism, judgment of others and self-centered attitudes.
It seems the more government tries to clamp down on traffic violations, the worse things get. I continually see people using their smartphones fixed to their windshields for navigation, except they stream movies or shows or text from them. It is that much harder to control when every window except the windshield is allowed to be blacked out with tint. You can’t see in. I doubt they can see out, or they wouldn’t be missing the stop signs they roll through. There should be laws against these things to help the police do their job, which is to protect people.
Two more Illinois politicians are going to jail for misuse of campaign funds. I hope the watch, children’s furniture, Michael Jackson’s fedora and Bruce Lee memorabilia was worth the time in jail for former U.S. Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr. and his wife, former Chicago Ald. Sandi Jackson. At least Rita Crundwell, a former comptroller from Dixon, is going to jail for embezzling $53 million from a small town and has a lot more to show for her crime.

I took a bus recently and was appalled at the clothes that schoolkids had on. Some had their pants below their butts with their underwear out in the open. Some had jeans on that looked like they were out in a bomb blast, with holes all over their jeans. If they think they look cool, then they are sadly mistaken. I’m amazed that they are allowed to get into school dressed like bums.
I don’t know what’s more sickening, the fact that Cook County Commissioner William Beavers lost $477,000 at a casino over three years or the fact that he lost $477,000 at an Indiana casino, not an Illinois casino.
Kate from Midlothian
Chicago Bulls star Derrick Rose still is not playing basketball. In the meantime he was able to have a girlfriend and a baby. This doesn’t affect his knee. I think if the Bulls put a stop on his salary until he gets back on the court then he would heal really fast. I think this business about his knee is a joke.
If I were elected president and believed that capitalism, free enterprise and the U.S. Constitution should be replaced by socialism and an oligarchy, I would try to achieve those changes by destroying the national economy. Once that was done, the desperate public would cheer for me and do whatever I wanted.
Stay-At-Home Dad columnist Howard A. Ludwig explains how his 6-year-old son takes over a spare bedroom and turns it into a clubhouse. Had I ever put a “keep out” sign anywhere in my parents’ home growing up they would have immediately removed it, come in and explain to me in very clear detail that there was nowhere in their house that they were going to keep out of. I was the child and they were the parents. Instead of calling psychiatrists, why don’t you take control of these children, Howard?
It seems many politicians are using their campaign funds for personal use. I don’t see why anybody would ever donate money to a campaign fund again. I certainly will not.
A lot of Speak Out commenters continuously whine about women on the Link card and unwanted pregnancies. You would be a lot more believable if you blamed the men involved in the situations also. These women didn’t get into this situation by themselves. You need to think about that.
I think President Obama needs to own up to the mess that he is making. It’s his fault that he doesn’t know how to cut spending. All he keeps doing is raising taxes to solve everything. Raising taxes is not helping. He needs to stop his spending and his flying all over the United States and do his job.
We truly do not know how much time we have on this planet, so cherish every moment you have with your family and your friends. I unexpectedly lost a close friend of mine, and she was virtually the same age as me. It reminded me of how fragile life is. Thank you, Annie, for all the great memories. We sure had some good times, and I wish we still had the time to have many more. I miss you like crazy already, girl. Rest in peace.
