I vacationed on Hilton Head Island, S.C. Regular gasoline sold for $3.09 a gallon at a premium station. Why is gas higher in Crook County?

About a missed item: To the couple who bought three sets of crystal glasses on the morning of June 20 at my garage sale on Creekside Drive in Homer Glen: Please come back. I believe you’re missing one from the six-piece set. If I’m not home, leave your contact information.

To former general manager Kenny Williams, of the Chicago White Sox: First, yes, you helped in giving us a World Series title. Second, I don’t blame you for giving up the GM position because what you left the new GM to work with, oh my gosh! It looks like it will be a long year on the South Side.

Regarding public employees: I think without the current system of supporting firemen, policemen and teachers with taxes, you would have to pay for their services privately. If your house is burning down, don’t call the fire department if you can’t afford it. If you are being mugged or raped, don’t call the police if you can’t afford it. If you want an education, don’t come to school if you can’t pay up like you do when you are at a restaurant. Is this the system you really want, one where only the rich can afford protection or an education?

Actor Jamie Foxx wore a support shirt for Trayvon Martin to the BET Awards the other night. So does this mean that if riots break out in Florida and elsewhere if George Zimmerman is found not guilty of second-degree murder that Jamie Foxx will be arrested for inciting the riots?

To all the people waiting in line for flood-relief benefits: How many of you actually had flood damage? Here are more ways to abuse the system.

We are seeing corruption to the highest level with former U.S. Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr. and his wife, former Chicago Ald. Sandi Jackson, working deals to the last minute. Since when do we accommodate convicted felons and try to help with their family care? There are nice grandparents who can care for the Jacksons’ children. They seemed to put the children last when they were spending taxpayer money and having quite the time thinking they would never get caught. Now it’s time to pay the piper. When prosecutors have all the evidence they don’t need to bargain anything with felons.

Some American bridges are collapsing and killing people. Some roads are almost impassable in many places because our infrastructure is failing. Millions who work have no health care because they can’t afford to buy it yet they don’t qualify for aid. But our moron of a president has decided to take $7 billion, some of which could come from our hard-earned money, and give it to Africa. President Obama can’t leave office quickly enough. Hey, liberals, how is the sharing of the wealth working for you?

I saw this appropriate quote: “Gas is more expensive than beer. Don’t drive; drink more beer.”

A commenter was so afraid of the Internal Revenue Service that they won’t write a letter to Forum. Seriously? Unless this person files taxes using creative accounting methods and isn’t honest, the IRS doesn’t give a hoot. Even if the IRS questions deductions or how you’ve listed income, the IRS does not persecute you. They tell you what they see as an error and you respond, eventually reaching an agreement. If you end up owing money, they’ll set up a payment plan where it can take years of low-dollar payments if you wish. This commenter needs to lose their paranoia.

Nowadays we are so politically correct as a society that I think we’ve overcorrected. Sprinkle in a dash of white guilt, and you have the Paula Deen situation in a nutshell. Instead of showing tolerance and forgiveness when it comes to the celebrity chef’s use of the N-word, we’ve shown that honesty is not the best policy and the truth will definitely not set you free.

How comforting it is to know that Gov. Pat Quinn wants to protect us from the law-abiding citizens that may opt to carry a concealed weapon. Hey Gov, how about a bill that protects us from all of you lying, thieving politicians?

Why doesn’t the government limit the amount accrued on the Link card? It should be zeroed out at the end of each month. This would prevent the card owner from accumulating large amounts of credit and selling the card for cash for a percentage of its value. This might cut much of the fraud inherent in the system. And why couldn’t each card feature a photo for identification? If an elderly or disabled person needed someone to do their shopping, a card could be issued for the shopper also, but it would have the same account number and a photo.

We called a Homewood business to order a pizza on a Sunday before 6:30 p.m. The person who answered said they were very backed up and to call back in an hour. I couldn’t believe what I heard and told him this was poor customer service. He could’ve said something like, “We’re backed up so you may have to wait longer for your pizza.” At least, they would’ve had my business. I told him I was going to call another place to order my pizza. Has anyone heard of a business not taking your order and saying to call back?
