Is there anything better than jumping into a nice, cool pool on a hot summer day? I think not. Take advantage of the pools in the Southland, and make a day of it with your family.

I’m sure glad fireworks are illegal in Illinois. On July 4 we endured house-rattling, car alarm-tripping booms from mid-morning through late evening. From 7 to approximately 11 p.m., the fireworks were nonstop. I’m so glad men risked their lives by signing the Declaration of Independence so several hundred years later the citizens of America are able to celebrate by literally having their hard-earned money go up in smoke and flames. No wonder we have the elected officials we do. Most people haven’t a clue as to how to be responsible citizens.

Chicago

What’s wrong with this picture? The very day celebrity chef Paula Deen is exposed as using the N-word years ago, a cable channel airs “Blazing Saddles,” a Mel Brooks comedy which used the N-word repeatedly. Where is the politically correct crowd’s outrage on this movie? In my opinion, the acronym PC stands for petty complainers.

Rick from Worth

I want to thank the Illinois Lottery for the past 35 years. I’ve lost an estimated $250,000 myself. I’m filing my third bankruptcy because of the Illinois Lottery. It’s a real winning game. Shove it.

RC from Oak Lawn

It’s a pity that young people are so neglected by their parents. I see young females with their bras hanging out of their clothing. Shoulder-less tops, low-cut fronts and cutout backs leave the bra, often black, so visible that it seems pointless to bother with the top at all. These girls look like they are selling. Where are their parents?

Tinley Park

Why is President Obama marching around Africa telling the world the United States is going to give millions to Africa for their development? Did he forget that he was elected by the American people to put the United States on track to solve our problems of unemployment, illegal immigration, a policy on health care reform and, above all, to reduce the huge federal debt that he has contributed to? Mr. Obama, it is time to come back to the United States and work on our own problems. Stop running away from the people who hope you will solve these problems.

Edward from Frankfort

Let’s say I am a professional athlete. I make more money in a year than the majority of you average folks make in your whole lifetime. When my team wins we are honored with parades and victory celebrations while you average or less-than-average fans struggle and strain just to get a glimpse of me, yet you still congratulate me again and express how proud you are of me and my team and the city we represent. Get a life! We do appreciate you spending your money on memorabilia and insane ticket prices. Stay proud and keep me in the bucks.

Palos Park

A Speak Out commenter mentioned that some people don’t have empathy for people who are poor. I do have empathy for people and charities that deserve it. The key word here is “deserve.” People who live off of the empathy of others don’t deserve it. Neither do charities whose administrative costs are the majority of your donations.

Bob from Oak Forest

I live in the 10th Ward and I want to know: Do the police ever stop and check to see if these street vendors have a license? There are too many on the street corners.

Sam

We already have a new dream airport all ready to go but no planes. We have a dream prison with no prisoners. Both were paid for by the taxpayers without a vote on either one. Now we want another dream airport, paid for by the taxpayers. Has anyone ever asked the airlines if they want to land there? Here is a famous quote: “Build it. They will not come.”

Ernie from Markham

I think it’s funny that many people think that National Security Agency leaker Edward Snowden is a traitor and should be tried as a criminal. Mr. Snowden exposed what has been going on inside our U.S. government as far as spying on citizens and others. It’s no secret that things have changed since 9/11. Snowden is not a traitor. He is a hero. Maybe things have gone a little too far with all of this spying.

So why is it when we use credit cards or a check we must show identification but Link card users don’t have to? Many of us know users who sell Link cards for cash.

As someone who went to both Chicago Blackhawks celebrations when they won the Stanley Cup, let me tell you that former Chicago Mayor Richard Daley really knows how to throw a parade. The parade Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel threw was an embarrassment. People stood four hours to see a bus go by at 35 mph. We got to see all of five seconds of our Blackhawks. It was an embarrassment.

Bill from Mount Greenwood

Many people seem to be getting in-home monitoring services where you can watch the inside of your house. This is fine if you are the only one monitoring your house because you put in these cameras. But many security companies install this service and can monitor the inside of your house. Has anyone read the book “Nineteen Eighty-Four?” The only thing author George Orwell got wrong was the year. Do you really think it’s a good idea to have strangers watching your house? People need to wake up. It’s scary what people are accepting and losing in their personal freedoms.
