Letter writer Bill Gaudry says Pope Francis’ remarks about gay people were misunderstood. I agree with Mr. Gaudry, but he’s the one who misunderstands.
Gaudry says that the pope did not say “to the Catholic Church and the world that it’s OK to be gay.” But this is what the pope actually said: “If a gay person seeks the Lord and has a good will, who am I to judge them?” In other words, Mr. Gaudry, the pope is deferring to God. This may be a backdoor way of saying it’s OK to be a gay or it may not be.
But in any event, Mr. Gaudry, if you are, as you say, on a spiritual journey, I’d suggest you stop trying to play God. After all, Pope Francis has.
