I’m glad to hear that Swallow Cliff Forest Preserve’s stairway will be getting a tougher workout. It’s an accomplishment to climb those steps at a great Southland spot for people to get their fitness on.

President Obama should be treated with more respect. President Abraham Lincoln made the wildly unpopular decision to do away with slavery and declare everyone free. It was challenged, questioned and even led to his being killed, but it was morally the right thing to do. President Obama enacted the Affordable Care Act, not at all popular with the wealthy congressman and congresswomen. It is another morally right law tested by the Supreme Court and found legal. Grand Old Party and Tea Party members, explain why you’re entitled to health care but constituencies not.

Park Forest

To Tinley Park Mayor Ed Zabrocki: Please don’t listen to those people with $400,000 homes in Brookside Glen who want nothing more than a soybean field to live next to. They don’t control all of Tinley Park. We have rights too. Just because we can’t go to board meetings and make a big stink doesn’t mean we shouldn’t be heard. I’m dissatisfied with the result of the Summit Hill School District 161 Board vote. I think they bowed to the pressure of those rich few who could afford to squawk. Bring the Wal-Mart to this town.

Regarding gay marriage: So some fundamentalists want to say that gay marriage isn’t the way of the Bible. OK, so how do you rationalize banning gay marriages from other religions that aren’t your own? That’s illegal, and that’s why there is separation of church and state. Your religious laws have no rule over other religions that treat gays and straights as equals. Everyone should have the opportunity to further their committed relationships especially people that don’t marry for superficial reasons.

Chicago

The U.S. government gets away with things like a government shutdown because the mindless millions blame one party or the other instead of blaming them all. It’s not just the Republicans’ and it’s not just the Democrats’ fault. It’s all of these extremely rich and powerful people together who are doing this. Do you think they are suffering? No, I think they are not. It doesn’t matter how this country tanks. They are still rich and we are not.

To John from Homer Glen: Not everyone has a credit or debit card. If they do, they carry it on them to prevent identity theft since it can be easy to use someone else’s card at the gasoline pump. You said, “Come into the 21st century,” but I think you should come into the 21st century. Identity theft happens all the time plus many gas stations have 5 cents off if you pay with cash.

Before people start throwing stones at the woman who killed the baby in Oak Lawn, I think there is a bigger problem that should be addressed, and that is mental health. Something we should all be concerned with is getting people who need the help, the help that they need.

Bob from Orland Park

Regarding the Rich Township High School District 227 students involved in the fight at Rich South High School in Richton Park: I grew up in the 1970s. I kid you not, but somehow my dad found out anything and everything I did. Heaven forbid the school called! Kids need parents to teach them accountability.

It utterly dismays me to see how many people deride scientific theory as if it were mere speculation. In science, a theory is an explanation of observed phenomena based on numerous tests and often well-documented data. This is not to be confused with an everyday theory that may be simply a hunch or a brainstorm. Thus evolution, for example, fits in with the former definition instead of the latter.

Ron from Alsip

I thought the sign of a good leader was to negotiate and make things work out for the better good. Obviously, that is not the case with President Obama. He is going to have his way no matter what. He would shove it down our taxpayers’ throats no matter what. Can you imaging saying that to your employer? Would you ever say, “I want it this way and I don’t care what you say.” Obama needs to remember that we employ him; he doesn’t employ us.

Pete from Oak Lawn

It will be trick-or-treat time in a week or so. Halloween tricksters will be a-ringing and a-knocking. All you neighbors should show your generosity in this year of a tough economy that may have affected many families in the area. Parents, be on guard and look over those treats. The temperament of a few ghoulish folks might put a chill in those gags of goodies the children bring home.
