Bachelors Grove Cemetery, near Midlothian, dates back to the 1840s, when Irish, English, Scottish and German settlers moved into the area. | Donna Vickroy~Sun-Times Media

It’s that time of year when everyone has a spooky story to tell. It was great to read about Bachelors Grove Cemetery near Midlothian. It reminded me that I should make a visit out there sometime.
There are good people in the world. I fell in Oak Lawn while taking my dog to the veterinarian. Within seconds a Chicago paramedic riding his bike on Cicero Avenue stopped to see if he could help. So did a woman coming out of the vet with her dog. She took my dog into the office. Several other people including an Oak Lawn police officer also stopped to help. Thank you to all of you.

Pope Francis busted Franz-Peter Tebartz-van Elst, a German Catholic bishop, for spending $42 million, six times too much, while remodeling his residence. One wonders if he had stayed on budget and only spent $7 million if he would’ve stayed in the Vatican’s good graces. I continue to be mystified why otherwise good, conservative Catholics allow the opulence that is the Vatican and the mansions occupied by their leaders. I guess these are the same good, conservative Catholics that put up little fuss when our government spends on war but get bent out of shape over programs to help the underprivileged.
What good is the Federal Communications Commission’s Do-Not-Call Registry? I’ve been on this list since the beginning yet I still receive harassing calls. What gets me is when you call the number left on your caller identification seconds later, you get a recording saying the number has been disconnected. How is this possible? The phone companies allow businesses to have phone numbers that can only call but cannot receive calls, which fuels these scam spam numbers. These numbers should be stopped. These are the ones that are doing these harassing calls and the do-not-call list can do nothing about them.
The government shutdown is over. To those federal workers that cried like babies about not getting their paychecks: If you’re living paycheck to paycheck, you’re like the government you’re working for. Spend like there is no tomorrow but have no fear. They’ll be getting back pay so they took a paid vacation. Whose idea was it to pay them anyway? They were getting unemployment, and some states are saying to keep it. I know those running America now are crazy idiots, starting at the right to the king himself. President Obama is still nothing more than a high-paid community activist.
Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel announced a “Kids Fund” for summer, after-school and other programs be established and funded by new speed camera revenues estimated at $70 million yearly. How can the mayor alone make this decision involving that much money while the city is in a financial crisis?
I think guns and violence in school replaced prayer.
For 30 years Democrats have run Illinois and for 30 years I think we have had nothing but tax increases and slaps in the face from the Democratic Party. We have had the most corrupt people in the world in Illinois politics. And we can’t understand why our taxes keep going up, up, up?
To the antievolutionist: Look in the dictionary for the definition of “theory.” You’ll find one of them refers to scientific theory, which isn’t speculation. The theory of evolution explains how life on Earth developed into what they now are and how they’re changing even now. It has nothing to do with living forever. It just explains life. Evolution isn’t just about humans. Also, there will never be a missing link found because modern apes and humans have a common ancestor, but humans didn’t come from apes or vice versa. Science moves forward but antiscience people seem stuck on century-old ideas.
Education activist Malala Yousafzai deserved the Nobel Peace Prize. She was shot in the head at close range by a cowardly, low-down Taliban member. She was only 14 years old yet even after this she has the strength to continue her battle against the enslavement of women worldwide by ignorant backwards men. Malala is an inspiration to all women. Hopefully one day the idea of barefoot, pregnant and totally ignorant will be gone from our world.
Where are they now? I love watching the old “Ironside” TV show. He was always battling young protestors and revolutionaries all bent on changing our way of life. They knew better, but where are they now? I know. They work at Goldman Sachs and LaSalle Street law firms and live in Barrington or Kenilworth. They drive Lexus and BMW vehicles and are staunch Republicans. My how times change one’s outlook on life!
A lot of people are saying that President Obama exempted hundreds of groups, including Congress, from Obamacare. This is not correct. The Department of Health and Human Services granted one-year waivers to many groups to get their people compliant for the full implementation of Obamacare. Also, Congress is not exempt from Obamacare. They are required to participate in Obamacare. If you have health insurance you don’t even have to worry about Obamacare.
Regarding Chicago Bull Derrick Rose: Stop complaining about him sitting out a year and worry about yourselves. Basketball player Derrick Rose is not the person cutting your pay at work or messing with your pension. You don’t know how hard it is to come back from an injury like an anterior cruciate ligament tear and the mental toll it takes on you.
