Regarding technology: I remember not so long ago that if we used a calculator we got a zero for cheating. I think kids now use them all the time.

If you can afford to feed a horse then you can afford approximately $35 to ride it.

I have a brilliant idea how the lottery can up sales. Make the odds of winning better. It’s not rocket science for crying out loud. Once in a while I’ll splurge and spend $20 on two or four scratch-offs and can’t even win a free ticket. I think no one in Illinois wins a huge payout. Why is that? I think it’s nothing but a giant rip-off with someone pocketing the money.

Regarding Downtown Equestrian Center: I would bet Shannon Sullivan’s family must be proud of her for the work she does with horses at Downtown Equestrian in Frankfort. I know I am.

MR from Worth

Does anyone feel like we are living in a communist or socialist state? We have cameras taking pictures of your license plate and roadblocks to enforce seat-belt laws. We’re told what’s good to eat and what’s not good to eat and how much water you should have in your washing machine and toilet among other things. It’s just too much government regulation and control. I don’t want all of this government control.

Pete from Oak Lawn

Former Cook County Commissioner William Beavers just got six months for cheating on his taxes and improperly using his campaign funds. Sound familiar? Former U.S. Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr. got 30 months for improperly using campaign funds and former Chicago Ald. Sandi Jackson got 12 months for cheating on her taxes. It sounds like the Jacksons got the raw deal. Now I know it’s not the same type of charges, but I think former Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich really got a raw deal with 14 years for his corruption. Maybe there is a downward trend in Illinois corruption sentencing.

Regarding f-bombs: This past weekend my cable company offered viewing of their movie channels for free. I took the opportunity and recorded a bunch of movies on my digital video recorder. Well, I’ve watched a few and, for the most part, I wouldn’t have paid for them via subscription. However, of greater concern is the saturation of the dialogue in these movies with every vulgar word out there. I’m no prude but truthfully the over-the-top vulgarity adds absolutely nothing to the movie. The f-bombs and such just caused me to turn off a bad movie that much sooner.

I’m tired of hearing people say that Chicago Bull Derrick Rose is a great basketball player. If he is so great, then why hasn’t he won a championship for the Bulls yet?

I think President Obama totally conned us. It’s the oldest trick in the book. Look it up. It’s called snake oil. He took his traveling show and sold us on some health tonic he knew wouldn’t work.

To the Crestwood commenter about Thanksgiving Day: I do not think the village of Crestwood would shut down if all the retail in that town would close for one day. I know your fellow citizens enjoy all the retail sales tax dollars generated for your town. I’m also sure your neighbors with no giant big-box stores have a different opinion.

I think the Detroit bankruptcy should send a clear message to other cities and states in financial trouble to get their house in order and stop demanding what strapped-out taxpayers cannot afford anymore, high salaries and lifetime pensions all on the backs of taxes. It should also let anyone know and understand how to identify when a politician is lying, as in when their lips move. Public workers need to understand their once golden goose has died. All those good-paying manufacturing jobs we had are gone with the wind as are all the easy taxes that fed the public workers.

To Karen from Tinley Park: It is sentiments like yours about wild animals that has led to the extinction of many species of wildlife. You’re so worried about your own personal interest that you would kill them just so you can feel safe? First you take their home and then you take their life. Haven’t we done enough damage to the ecosystem?

Mike N. from Posen

Type 2 diabetes contributing factors include obesity or being overweight due to overeating. Your body cannot produce enough insulin to metabolize the carbohydrates ingested. The incidence of diabetes has skyrocketed in the United States as the rate of obesity has increased, so keep eating those candy bars and french fries.

Pat from Lemont

Get into the big city once in a while. The winter parking ban in Chicago has been in effect for decades. We had Michael Bilandic, a mayor in the 1970s, who lost the office because Chicago didn’t do an effective job of snow removal after a blizzard. A big problem was cars parked on the major arterial streets. By the way, the NBC-TV (Channel 5) news at 10 p.m. had a story reminding people the ban was going into effect Dec. 1. There are also all those signs on all of the streets that have overnight winter parking bans.
