A thank-you. I want to send a big “thank you” to our neighbor Scott for plowing our snow.

Rose from Oak Forest

I hope they raise the cigarette tax to save my life. Secondhand smoke can cause early death in people who don’t smoke. Smokers stink when walking into a room. How many have been killed in collisions by smokers who dropped their lit cigarette and tried to find it? How many have been burned in their apartments because a smoker fell asleep while smoking? How many forest fires have been started by smokers throwing lit butts out the car window? Yes, I drink. I don’t drive afterward. My drinking doesn’t give you lung cancer or cirrhosis. Take up drinking. It’s healthier.

Chicago Ridge

I watch some of our politicians and some news media outlets such as Fox News blame the working poor for remaining poor. However, you never hear them place blame or criticize someone like Jamie Dimon, JPMorgan Chase chief executive officer, whose company continues to get fined for illegal acts. Shouldn’t this guy get fired? Instead, he continues to make his multimillion-dollar salary and no one says a word, yet we continue to put down the poor. I think something is wrong with this picture.

Why is it that when it snows people forget about common sense? Clean the snow off your car. The person behind you doesn’t appreciate your snow blowing on their car, causing them limited visibility. Clean the snow off your headlights and taillights so you can be seen coming and if you are breaking. Turn on your headlights so you can be seen in limited visibility. Use your turn signals when changing lanes and turning. Don’t speed or tailgate. Give yourself enough time to get where you are going safely, so leave earlier than you originally planned. Thank you.

I think President Obama, himself, dropped the ball on the health care website because it was his baby, and he should have stayed on top of it. He relied on his staff and took them at their word instead of saying that heads would roll if things didn’t go to plan. I think it bombed on him. However, he manned up and took the blame. Others would have removed the blame from themselves by replacing the staff. Is this good politics or bad politics? I guess it depends on how you look at it.

Dear Santa Claus, all I want for Christmas is for people to come to terms with themselves. Most of us have worked hard to provide for ourselves. We may not be millionaires but we’re grateful for what we have. For those who’ve been more fortunate, they deserve their blessings. For people who are still trying to find their way, give them peace, direction and piece of mind.

BJ from Hazel Crest

About manners: I get upset when I see a person I like being upstaged by the commentator. A person is asked a question, his or her opinion, and the reporter talks over their answer. If the reporter wants us to hear their opinion, then do not have a guest speaker. I think this is ignorant.

I’m the proud daughter of a Vietnam veteran. Speaking as a youth who enjoys video games and action movies, shame on you. If it weren’t for these so-called finger-wagging generations you speak of, you wouldn’t have the freedom to play your violent video games nor your First Amendment right to make your comment. If it weren’t for these generations, we’d be living in a Communist country and have no freedoms. You should be thanking these brave people instead of criticizing them. I think our future is bleak if this is the view of all current youth.

Regarding texting: As a former teacher, I am troubled to see people, especially young people, texting and abandoning all correct use of grammar, punctuation and spelling. I wonder if they can compose and write a coherent essay.

Adele

Dear director Tyler Perry, there are several movies featuring the Madea character. Enough already! Come up with some new material.

Rick from Evergreen Park

A person stated in the Speak Out printed on Dec. 13 that with all the political scandals that he would rather do business with the mafia. Well, where do you think the politicians aka the government learned their dirty tricks? I think it was from investigating and prosecuting their biggest competition, which is the mafia.

I think that big A representing atheists, erected in Daley Plaza near the Christmas Nativity scene and Jewish menorah, should stand for arrogance as that’s what they are. I think they should get a life as they are trying to destroy (but will not succeed in destroying) the one who created life.

Instead of having lawmakers create law and all of this havoc, we should have a group of people with a common-sense approach. These lawyers are just educated liars who manipulate the system and use our funds to do so.
