Thanks! Kudos to the Palos Heights street department for doing a wonderful job of keeping our streets clean in this crazy winter. Also thanks to our mailman and paper delivery person. Everyone is doing a great job. Thanks to all!
It seems that the football players at Northwestern University want to be unionized. Hopefully, this is the first step in having the NFL initiate a minor league of its own. This would effectively transfer players, who have no academic reason to be in college, to pursue their aspirations to be paid professionals. This would leave university scholarships to those who truly deserve to benefit from them.
We in Illinois are subjected to a constant barrage of propaganda that businesses will leave Illinois if they don’t get a big tax break, and educated and motivated workers will leave Illinois when they can get better-paying jobs elsewhere. Corporations bleat that the Illinois business climate is bad for small businesses. I think big-box stores that drive out small retailers and corporations that violate workers contracts are bad for business too.
I noted in Speak Out recently that a commenter noted that it seemed like many used the feature to complain about things. I’ve also noted that some have used Speak Out to offer a sincere thank-you for help provided to them. Perhaps Speak Out is used for complaining (venting) a lot, but consider how fortunate we are to live in a land that allows us to complain publicly. There are many countries where public discourse such as Speak Out in a newspaper isn’t allowed and complaints about government, whether public or even private, are considered a felony.

Some say the cost of a higher minimum wage will force companies to pass the cost on to the consumer with higher prices. I don’t think a higher minimum wage would necessarily mean higher prices, but I do think companies would just hire less people and maybe even fire existing employees. I think the cost of a higher minimum wage will be passed along to the worker in the form of less jobs.
The United States spent $200 million on a program to teach Afghan soldiers to read. Why are we doing this when children here can’t pay their college loans because they can’t get jobs? That $200 million could have been used to wipe out college loans so people wouldn’t have to start off with thousands in debt. Some Chicago schools are closing due to lack of funds yet we gave $200 million to Afghanistan.

I just received my first installment for my property tax bill. It’s much, much higher than it was last year. Even though it states that exemptions such as homeowner and senior will be reflected on the second installment, we have been hit with a wrecking ball. I guess there is nothing we can do about it but complain.
I don’t know if President Obama knew anything about all of the scandals that have taken place under his watch. The president is surrounded by advisers. If somebody doesn’t tell him about a scandal then how is he supposed to know about it? I guess there is corruption everywhere including the White House.
Why do they like to put all kinds of restrictions, regulations, burdens and identifications on something such as the right to bear arms, but at the same time it is a burden or suppression to require identification to vote?
There is a simple solution to credit card scams. If you need an object then pay cash. If you need an object but you can’t pay cash, then you don’t need that object.

About global warming: I was wondering with this polar vortex-arctic weather blast crippling the area here in Chiberia and across the United States as to the wherabouts of former Vice President Al Gore. Most likely he is playing golf with his wife, Tipper, at a resort in Maui on the Hawaiian Islands and surfing the Internet. Global warming, yeah, right! Bah, humbug!

I read with disbelief and horror about Tracy Cherry, a Calumet Park woman who left her dog outside for 12 hours on one of the coldest arctic days in January. The poor dog froze to death. Reading about this inhumane act made me sick. If you don’t want an animal then surrender it to a shelter. In a perfect world the punishment would fit the crime.
We don’t need a new law making it a felony to prevent people from posting nude photos of ex-lovers online. If people are foolish enough to let anyone take nude photos of them, then I think whatever happens to these photos is their own fault.
Every time President Obama governs through executive order and bypasses Congress he is being a dictator and ignoring the will of the people as expressed through the elected representatives in Congress. This is not democracy.
