SPEAK OUT COMMENT: "A lot of municipalities are grumbling that they are running out of money in their budgets due to the snow. What about what should have been overage in the budget due to past mild winters?" | Getty Images photo

I watch Food Network periodically to get some new recipes. It seems every time I want to try something new, the recipe calls for items I’ve never heard of or have no idea where to purchase.

Somebody needs to lock up pop star Justin Bieber. I think this kid gets away with too much. Now they stopped his plane because they smelled marijuana. I think this guy is completely out of hand. It’s time for somebody to do something to put this guy in his place and lock it up. It looks like his parents are not better because they let him get away with anything he wants. Is it because he makes so much money?
A comment was made congratulating people for saving a certain type of school. I wonder if that person realizes how far American students are behind young people around the world. A study of 49 countries ranked American students 25th in math and 17th in science. A child with a high IQ and 16 years of schooling can graduate from certain universities and not know the correct age of the planet he lives on. A recent Pew Research Center survey reported that one-third of Americans and 43 percent of Republicans don’t believe in evolution. I don’t believe congratulations are in order.

If I hear another commercial for American Addiction Centers or Cancer Treatment Centers of America, I will end up a true cancer, drug and alcohol addict. These ads are killing me. Put the money for these ads to better use. Find cures for these problems.

Hey, Alsip Joe, I think the fact that New York Yankee Alex Rodriguez is banned for the entire baseball season has effectively ended his playing career. I don’t know why you are picking on MLB commissioner Bud Selig. You should be angry with the owners for keeping Rodriguez in that position. Now if you are looking for something to be upset about, how do you feel about reinstating former MLB player and manager Pete Rose? Yes, he violated a rule by gambling on baseball games. He has more than paid the price for that. Some rules need to be changed.

These self-described rugged individualist patriots don’t want to pay taxes. They believe everything they’ve got is due to their hard work. Do they think they’d have the same success if they’d been born without the U.S. infrastructure, culture, stability and system of government? We have to pay our share for everything America provides and we take for granted. Opportunity is not free, nor is it equal even in a democracy. Refusing to accept our share of the burden is selfish and treason since it denies the debt we owe our fellow Americans for maintaining things which make America great.
I think if the trade policies and tax policies in the United States weren’t so screwed up that corporations find it better to leave, then we wouldn’t have to worry about cutting corporate taxes to keep them here.
FOX 32 news reported some Bellwood, Ill., officials were filling up their gasoline tanks unauthorized for years, costing taxpayers approximately $35,000 per year. The officials were seen on television running and dodging the cameras. I think we taxpayers have to take up the slack and pay more because of this type of abuse.
Why do people still walk in the street even though the sidewalk has been cleared? If a driver were to hit one of them it would still be our fault even though these people have no reason to be walking in the street because there is a clear sidewalk.
A lot of these actors spent years in acting schools pursuing a dream. For the lucky few, they may have spent more than 20 years making movies before finally getting a nomination. I think we forget that they are just regular people like us. We hand out Golden Apple Awards for Excellence in Teaching to teachers and most valuable player awards to athletes, so why aren’t actors worthy?
To the commenter who said, “If mass shootings occurred in the gun-loving South, would they love their guns so much?”: Being born and raised in the gun-loving South, we are taught about guns and the damage they do. We’re taken hunting and learn that when you shoot something it dies. We are taught to respect all life and not take it unless you’re threatened and it’s them or you. You hunt because you kill it to eat. Maybe if the East, Midwest and West are taught this, there might not be this senseless killing. I’m proud of my Southern roots.
We need parents to educate their children. Parents at home could take the responsibility to take the role of preschool teachers and save the taxpayers this cost. I did it with pencils, paper, games, flash cards and library books. Before they went to kindergarten my children could recite and print the alphabet and numbers, identify colors, use crayons inside the lines, print their names and even do simple math. They all went to college and graduated.
I agree with a Speak Out commenter who stated it burns his butt to see these MLB teams reaching out to foreign players and paying them $100 million. I guess great minds think alike.

I was at a restaurant and saw three children actually talking to each other. I guess their cell phones had not defrosted yet.
