SPEAK OUT COMMENT: "About a new airport: I came back to the Southland after being gone for 30 years and we are still talking about an airport in Peotone. Who is about to rake in millions with this white elephant?" | File photo

How refreshing to read such an inspirational story about Alex Villafuerte from Richards High School in Oak Lawn. I think he’s a young man with a good head on his shoulders and dedication. Kudos to you and your parents for raising such a fine young man.
To attract more businesses Illinois House Speaker Michael Madigan wants to cut corporate taxes. Corporate taxes here in Illinois are high compared to some of our neighboring states. I think what they need to do is get control of their own house first and put an end to all this double-dipping and misuse of funds.
Besides paying a fortune to go to the Super Bowl, which can cost more than $1,000, when you get there they stick the dagger in deeper and twist it if you have your family with you. Talk about ruining a great spectacle! Soup is $8, hot chocolate is $11, hot dogs are $13 and beer costs $12. Is this fair or is this robbery?
A Speak Out commenter asked if anyone has ever seen something grow from the top down. Do you know what a stalactite is?

A Chicago police officer can have a base salary of $75,000 to $80,000 and make $80,000 to $100,000 more in overtime pay. It’s unbelievable yet true in our great city. Who’s auditing these off-the-chart amounts? Where are the Chicago alderman? Talk about obscene and ridiculous! I know it’s a high-risk job. Nevertheless, who’s padding the bill and time cards? Mayor Rahm Emanuel, you put in speed cameras. Get some global positioning systems and accounting investigating going for the Chicago Police Department. This is out of line. No wonder taxpayers are tired of having this passed along! Give me a break.
Leo from Chicago
What makes America great are the working people. It is not selfish to have what we worked for. Selfish are those who work the welfare system thinking they are entitled to our money. As the H&R Block guy says in that commercial, “Get your billion back, America.” Don’t let our money go for handouts.
To BJ from Hazel Crest: For those mystery items in recipes, I look them up on the Internet. Usually a great description is given and I can decide if I can substitute or omit.
To the person who said “we no longer live in a federal democratic republic” because the Supreme Court ruled we can spend money to influence elections: You are wrong. We do not live in a federal democratic republic. We live in a constitutional republic. One of the rights that Constitution guarantees is free speech, which means you and me can give money to any campaign we want. Thank God we have a constitutionally constrained electorate. Pure democracy would produce a tyranny of the majority that would destroy our nation and take away our rights.
As Gordon Gekko in the movie “Wall Street” proclaimed, “Greed is good.” Old Gordon might be mistaken because since 2009 there have been 79 convictions of insider trading, with more to come. Thank God someone is making these Wall Street snakes quiver while they slither. These guys, and ones like them, almost tanked the economy. They are some of the ones who precipitated the destruction of a large segment of the middle class. They are above the “little people.” Well, guys, take off the Armani suits and put on those nice orange jumpsuits. You deserve it, and you look “marvelous.”
Thank you to the SouthtownStar for letting me voice my opinion. Speak Out is a great way for common folk to express their feelings about what matters to them.
Bob from Chicago’s Beverly community said our schools are failing because graduates don’t know how old the planet we live on is. I don’t know what it is and have seen varying figures on this over the years. More importantly, I wonder how many people understand how a simple battery, switch and light bulb electrical circuit works, and what the difference is between a short circuit and an open circuit. These concepts are most basic to our understanding of how everything electrical and electronic works, and how these things sometimes don’t work.
I think taking away gun rights for medical marijuana patients is ridiculous. Why? Is it a dangerous mind-altering drug? Well, so are many other legal prescription drugs that don’t affect gun laws.
I’ve believed for a long time that one of the reasons the United States is in such a mess is because we take students fresh out of college and put them in management positions. Now I hear that there is a college course on the singer Beyonce at Rutgers University in New Jersey. She is supposedly a liberated woman yet runs around half-naked, which I think makes her a male toy. Can colleges please go back to real courses and teach students to think for themselves?
I love Golden Shoes in Palos Heights. I hope they stay in business forever. I took my children there when I lived in Palos Heights, and now I take my grandchildren there. It’s a long ride for me, but I know the hour-plus travel time is worth it. My grandchildren have wide feet and owner Marc Goldberg always fits them and brings out a wide selection of affordable shoes. He has top brands and also caters to people that have troubled feet like myself.
