Forum: Too much fear on Mother’s Day

Updated: June 12, 2014 6:09AM

his year has been horrendous for countless families throughout Chicago whose sons and daughters were victims of gun violence. Last weekend alone, four people died and 27 were wounded.

The shootings appear to be increasing in nearly every corner of the city. Despite the Chicago Police Department’s reports of a decline in overall killings, the senseless deaths of so many young people casts a pall over this Mother’s Day.

Mothers and fathers in neighborhoods across the city wake up every day thankful that their children are healthy and safe. The thought that someone, somewhere could take the life of their child over something like a Facebook posting or a mistake in identity is a pain no mother or father should ever have to bear.

But like all things in life, we are able to overcome these tragedies though our faith and with the love and support of our family, our friends and our community. Let us pray that mothers and fathers in this great city can find some comfort in knowing that they did the best job they could do, and that their children’s lives were purposeful and a blessing to all who knew them.

Happy Mother’s Day.
