Forum: Thanks for showing kindness

Updated: December 24, 2012 7:09AM

This is a nice story for Thanksgiving Day. My daughter, Casey Urbanik, is a special education teacher at Arbor Park School in Oak Forest.

On Nov. 13, she took her eight students on a field trip to Midlothian Music in Orland Park after speaking to the owner/manager, John Lekavich. When they arrived, John showed them around the store and demonstrated the musical instruments along with a co-worker, Mike Roti.

They assisted the students in trying out drums, guitars and other instruments in the store. To the students’ delight, John and Mike also put on an impromptu concert for them in the middle of the store. John also gave Casey a gift of an acoustic guitar to take back to class and invited everyone back for a follow-up visit.

These days, it’s especially gratifying to hear stories such as this. These students were accepted and included in what was an amazing day for them. It was heartwarming to know that John and his friend gave so generously of their time and assistance for these disabled students.

Time to move on

Regarding Philip Peffley’s letter in the Nov. 15 Forum, in which he sarcastically thanked voters for backing President Obama: Hey Phil, the election is over, Obama won. Get over it. Find another hobby other than writing whiny, inaccurate letters to the newspaper.

Obama victory predictable

On July 25, 2011, I authored a letter in Forum in which I explained how President Obama would win re-election because he would get the electoral votes in the key swing states that mattered. I made this prediction when Obama’s approval rating was a paltry 42 percent and the unemployment rate was a staggering 9.1 percent.

While my prophecy was almost spot-on, I couldn’t have done it alone. So I’d like to thank the following for their contributions: Mitt Romney, for telling 47 percent of Americans they don’t matter. Paul Ryan, for crafting a tax plan that would enrich the wealthy and gouge the poor.Donald Trump, for refusing to abandon “birtherism.”

Mitch McConnell, for saying his only goal was to deny President Obama’s re-election. House Republicans, for refusing to compromise on anything. Republican governors, for attempting to suppress voters at every turn. And the Tea Partiers, just because they’re so funny.

But most of all, a special congratulations goes to Dan Douglas, of Frankfort, who on Aug. 18, 2011, penned a counter to my column in which he foretold of a Republican presidential landslide victory that would be worse then Carter’s loss to Reagan. Nice call Dan, you obviously know your politics.

So as I did in my original letter, I will sign off with: Sorry conservatives. See you in 2016.
