Forum: Thanks to many for successful ‘Messiah’

Updated: January 26, 2013 6:22AM

On behalf of the Rotary Club of Park Forest, the Suburban Youth Symphony Orchestra and the Music Connection, I want to thank the SouthtownStar for publicizing our 28th annual Do-It-Yourself Messiah held Dec. 8 at Faith United Protestant Church in Park Forest.

We had such nice coverage, both online and in print. More than 300 people came to the Messiah, either as chorus participants or audience members.

The holiday concert was a wonderful opportunity to make music with area residents as well as introduce the growing number of children of the Suburban Youth Symphony Orchestra and its Incredible Opportunity Program to the timeless and beautiful music of the Messiah.

I must also thank Marie Grass Amenta, who did a fantastic job as choral conductor, and all the professional and semiprofessional musicians who played side by side with our advanced children of the orchestra.

A final thanks to the Park Forest Rotary Club for continuing to bring this annual event to our community and all the parents and students who showed such commitment to a quality performance.

The freedom to marry

The legislative leaders in Illinois have announced that in early January they will seek to pass a law allowing same-sex couples to marry in our state. The time is now for the General Assembly to pass this measure of basic fairness and dignity.

Many lesbians and gay men in Illinois — our neighbors, friends and co-workers — grew up just like me: dreaming of their wedding day. It is time for legislators to give their fellow Illinoisans the freedom to realize these dreams.

Same-sex couples will strengthen the institution of marriage. They want to marry because they love one another and know that it provides immeasurable support for their families and for families all across our nation.

Recent polls show that a majority of voters in Illinois support the freedom to marry for same-sex couples in our state. We deserve a policy that reflects our values — values of fairness and dignity for all Illinoisans.

When the Legislature meets in January, we hope Illinois will join the growing ranks of states that welcome all couples to marry the person they love. Now is the time.

Already over the cliff?

There’s a lot of attention to the “fiscal cliff,” but it’s too late. We went over it some time ago.

It’s like being in a four-engine airplane with three of the engines out. The descent of the plane is slow but sure, but the passengers hardly notice it. Most are oblivious to the circumstance and are quite comfortable enjoying the ride.

The problem is government spending. The national debt is so overwhelming as to be unsustainable and must be brought to an end. If it is not, the consequences are dire.

In the meantime, enjoy the scenery.
